Hi
Do you have any further information you can supply, regarding your James MOWAT ?
Does he have a second christian name ?
Any idea where in NZ he may have settled ?
There are MANY James MOWAT's !!
In a quick search, I've found half a dozen ... none of whom seem to be the person you are seeking.
Two who appear on the Archives "Archway" site, you can rule out . Probate records for James MOWAT of Dunedin - died 1906 (a native of Caithness, but born circa 1823) ... and James MOWAT - Dunedin - probate date 1945 appears to have died late 1944, was a native of Australia aged 81. Source: cemetery records at - http://www.cityofdunedin.com/public/registers?Burl_form+F
Of 4 records found in Wellington cemeteries - none come close to matching James MOWAT born 1899.

Thanks Lu. James did not have a middle name, and he was definitely born in 1899. He arrived in New Zealand in Wellington. He was a shepherd and his family were mainly involved in agriculture. I had earmarked the 1945 Dunedin death as a possible but obviously that can be ruled out. The only other one I found on the Archway site was an Auckland probate dated 1959, but I have not been able to access any other Auckland records online, so far.

Thank you. The age at death would appear to be about 4 years out. I would need to check the death certificate for his parents to be sure. His parents were James Mowat and Helen Sutherland.

There is a number of Mowat's on my tree, thought this may of been a uncle to this James. Our Mowat family lived in Rangiora, Canterbury, and they changed the name to Mowatt. Donald Mowat was born (1837) in Huna, Caithness, Scotland. So far I only have 5 siblings to Donald, (no James at the moment), but he did name one of his son's James. There is another line of Mowat's from a Isabel Mowat married in 1773 to Alexander Lyall in Dunett, Caithness, Scotland. It must of been a small town as the Lyall and Mowat families have married a couple of times. Worth having a look and see if there are any connections, certainly enough of them. Happy hunting Suzy W

Thanks Suzy, but I am afraid yours are a different lot of Mowats. Mine seem to be from south of Wick whereas yours are from further north, Dunnet/Huna. My James's parents were James Mowat and Helen Sutherland who lived at Halsary, Latheron. James's grandparents were Alexander Mowat and Elizabeth Brims, and his g-grandparents were Donald Mowat and Helen Oag who married !5 Apr 1794 in Latheron. That is as far back as I have verified information. If there is a connection to yours it will be earlier than this. Spittalhill

Hi Suzy, I should have added that Huna and Dunnet were rural crofting/fishing communities, hamlets at most, so you will get the samefamily names cropping up. Spittalhill

Hi Lucy, I will keep that in mind. I dont know if James married and had family. I would need sight of a marriage or death certificate to confirm whether or not that was him at Purewa. Spittalhill
