Hi John,

Have you had a look at Papers Past? Alan gave you the link in the previous thread....but here it is again:

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast

There is a lot there about George Limming. In the article about his retirement in 1880 it said he was leaving Westland. His death cert would reveal more but I can't see a probate for him or anyone with that name. Is it possible that he left NZ?

I'm a bit confused about your reference to the Alexander Turnbull  Library.  Huh
What was in their letter?

Hi John,

OK - Alan also found a marriage for you. You could get the marriage cert but  unfortunately pre-1880 certs don't have as much information as later ones.
We know from some of the newspaper articles that he was in NZ as early as 1854. Have you looked at any shipping lists? There are links to these at the top of the NZ board as well as some other great resources.
Have you looked at early censuses in the UK?

We do know that he was married because Alamar found this marriage for you and posted it in the previous thread.

Hi again John

I am afraid you will have to get it out of your head that your man was in Hokitika in 1854.  Unlike England, New Zealand is a VERY new country. There was nobody but a few Poutini Ngaitahu maori in the Hokitika area until October 1864 when John Hudson and James Price established a store at the mouth of the Hokitika River following the discovery of gold. Before then there were no European settlers. None whatsoever, only a few visiting explorers and surveyors.

The first European to settle on the West Coast was a chap named Mackley who settled a little further north on the Grey river in 1861. Even the larger town of Greymouth was not founded until 1863, and even then this was only a Govt depot to supply the Government's surveyors in the area.

Even my city of Christchurch was not established until 1850, though there were some notable earlier arrivals.

Sorry for the history lesson but the relative youth of this country is sometimes difficult for those accustomed to much older cultures to come to grips with. That applies especially to the bush covered, wild and impenetrable area that the West Coast was, and in some places thankfully still is.

Hi John,  As Stephanie has suggested a perusal of paperspast gives some good information about Mr Limming's career.

A search on a mistype of "Limmimg" brings up his early appointment in the Customs Service in 1854 as a Tidewaiter in Nelson.  The first mention of him at Hokitika is as the sole and possibly first rep of the service there in about May 1865.

Regards
