Hello everyone
I'm looking for help with the Last / Heigho family from the Bury St Edmund's region in Suffolk. My paternal great-great grandmother was Emma Jane Last, born 14/01/1851 in Bury St Edmunds. Her birth certificate lists her parents as George Last, royal mariner and Martha Last, née Heyho (I've also seen it spelled Heigho, Heyhoe, Hayhoe, Hayhow). She married George Lyas (Lias, Lyus) on 4/02/1872 and on her marriage certificate her father's name is listed as Henry Last, soldier, deceased.
Martha married George Last in March 1836 and whilst I think I have Martha in the 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses, I can't find a confirmable trace of George anywhere.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advance

Hallo and welcome to Rootschat.
Could be that as Mr. Last was a mariner or soldier, he was away at census time.

Hello Sue
Gotta say, your photo freaks me out a bit, but never mind!
If I've got the right family in the 1851 census, there would appear to be 3 - 4 years between the birth of the children. I know this is not an exact science because babies died young then, but it's also possible that George was not around. Emma Jane was 2 months old at the time of the 1851 census and they were in Bury St Edmunds College Street Workhouse - George could have been at sea or away fighting and Martha had no means of support.
Once again, provided I have the right family, Martha eventually became a housekeeper to Henry Bullock in Stowmarket - one of the witnesses to Emma Jane's wedding was Harry Bullock, who is down as her brother in the 1891 census. Could be that George died when she was very young and Emma never knew her father, but why would Martha consider her status "married" and not "widow", unless she didn't know?

Glad you like my pic.
I take it you haven't found the family in 1841, looks like they are here, minus dad.

I have that as a tentative entry for them. I'm fairly certain of the 1851 and 1861 entries, because of Emma Jane, but before and after is all very much supposition.
I thought Last was going to be an unusual enough surname to not cause me problems, but I should have known!

I was going on baby Martha in 1841 and as a ten year old in 1851.
Nevertheless it doesn't solve the problem of dads correct name and his birthplace.
Also in 1841, Martha and co are living next door to a Charles and Martha Last, who might be dads parents.
