Genealogy/historical T.V-Would you do it???
« on: Saturday 15 January 05 08:40 GMT (UK) »

With the abundance of historical reality shows about-Would you do it?Yes, with bells on!I tried to convince hubby,he thinks Im nuts,15 yr old-Youre mad, mum!(but can I shoot a gun)? The seven year old said-Ill come with you, mum(he didnt have a clue!)All my friends blatently laughed at me and said "what about the computer".I know it would possibly be one of the hardest things to do in ones life, but I reckon it would be sooo cool, not to mention very, very interesting, from a Genealogy point of view,In australia we have 2 new shows starting in late January-"the Outback House "and "The Colony",Hmmm,I wish I was there,Cheers.

Those shows appear to be interesting on the face of it but when you actually look at it, they aren't real and never can be.

We had the Victorian House here and the WW II house and they were OK.

My main problems are that the people can never be like our ancestors were as we think it is a hardship to be without central heating and clean clothes.  For our ancestors it was normal so we start off way down.  When I was a kid we woke up to ice on the inside of our bedroom windows, outside bucket toilets etc and that was in the 1960's in central Norfolk, UK.

We can never feel the hunger they felt, the worry that our babies would die, the thought of where the next penny was coming from, the threat of the workhouse, the power over the poor by the rich, the general fears of life etc etc need I go on?

If you want to find out about your ancestor's lives, read books, research, investigate and then you will be able to imagine a little of their conditions, you will never be able to put yourself in their place as you were born in a different age with differing views and morals etc

I hope you enjoy your TV but please remember it is just entertainment, not anything like as hard as it was for your ancestors.

If you want to know more about conditions in rural Norfolk in the middle of the C19th drop me a PM.
