Oh yes it definitely starts with a W in the census, but Unsworth could have been misheard as Winsworth when the census was filled in, or writing misread when the information was transferred from the form the householder had to fill in. From what I've read on here in other posts, I think the person who collected the census sometimes filled them in for people who were illiterate/or possibly children who had some education filled them in for parents who couldn't read and write, so lots of room for mispellings/mishearing??

Welcome to my search.  Grin

It is so great to have someone who is local to Wigan on board as well.  I was getting that exasperated with this, I have been considering coming up to Wigan from Devon, to spend a week trying to find more information!!!

If this is of any help, I've double checked the birth certificates of the children again.  When John registered them, he signed his name.  When Elizabeth registered them, she made her mark with a cross.  John always remained a colliery engine tender, until his retirement/death.  Isabella's place of death was Rock Farm or Cottage, Ince in Makerfied.  The same place as where the family were living on the 1871 census.

Again, thank you all for taking an interest.

Best wishes

Super link.  Many thanks.  Just happened to notice Ince Hall Colliery near by.  Could of been when John Atherton worked as an engine tender?  Would I be right in thinking that the cottage they lived in would have been rented as part of the job?

I tried to find a little more information on the Colliery and Rock Hall, but not a lot came up.

Anyway, many thanks again for that.

Hi Al

Gosh.  I'm surprised there was any room left!!!

I've taken a look, as I was hoping to find the deaths of John's parents.  However, the record started after they died.  Both his parents died pre 1851 census, as the children are found living with their mother's sister.  Another mystery link I'm trying to explore.

Out of all my family searches, the Atherton lot seem to have the most secrets!!!  Huh

Anyway, many thanks for that link.  I did find other family stuff regarding my Dawson side that was of use.

Best wishes

Hi Al

If and when you do go, (don't just go specially for me will you?), did you read my post of 8th April?  John's 2nd marriage to Martha Turner, took place in Hope Chapel Wigan.  Was that not Independent?   Might be of some help.

I've a non-marriage certificate for another side of mine in Liverpool too.  However, the family story almost confirms that they never married anyway.  He got her pregnant.  She had the baby.  She couldn't cope with his strict behavior, so she left him with the baby and took off!  That was my grandmother's mother.  He would never have her name mentioned in the house again, so my grandmother knew absolutely nothing about her mother.  Therefore, all she is for me, is a name of my grandmother's birth certificate!  Quite sad really Sad

Anyway, many thanks for looking for me.

Hi, just noticed this thread and I live in Wigan too so have asked a couple of folk I know who live in Ince for more info.  They are stumped by the farm but one of them has an old map and will look it up.  Apparently there were a couple of collieries in that area at the time.  Not much help with the names I'm afraid but it's a little bit of history.  Oh yes, I think its Hope STREET chapel.  Bye,

Back again.  My fried has located where 81 Warrington Road would have been and it was fields, so quite a possibility of a small farm.  Sorry I don't have the facilities to help more.  Bye again.

Thanks for that.  Always great to receive a bit of the local history.

On the 1891 and 1901 census, John is sited as now living at 32 Warrington Road.  So he obviously didn't go far.  In 1901 he was classed as a colliery engine winder (above ground).  I don't know if this is the same job, or just a different description for that time.  However, he was consistant within his job.  None of his male born followed him into this trade.  They went on to be Cabinet Makers.

Anyway, many thanks for your help.  Much appreciated.

Hi Kim , got nowhere with the place of birth , their copy is a mite clearer than mine , and it IS either Winsworth  or  Winsmith ,,, my apologies to all the people I doubted ,,, but I did spot something of interest .

Looking through local directories I found these curious snippets ,in 1885 John Atherton living at No 81 is listed as a Labourer ,
in 1887--1888 he is living at No 32 is listed as   Herbal beer maker .
in 1903   still at No  32 and still a Herbal beer maker,,

Hi Al

Wow, how bizarre!!  Perhaps he did this as a side line to make extra money!!  Would account for all the later following male Atherton's who went into the pub trade  Grin

Many thanks for looking for me.  Perhaps Winsworth or Winsmith is right and the Lancashire bit is wrong?  Will we ever know?  Anyway, a little bit further, thanks to you  Cheesy

Best wishes
