Saltney Ferry F.H.C. Mystery, Help
« on: Monday 07 April 08 23:24 BST (UK) »

Hi All
Can you help me solve a well over 2 year problem? While I am back on my Greatorex tree to fill in some information I have lost, but is coming back bit by bit  I can’t remember whose sister she was but Kathleen Cecilia Greatorex Married Thomas Evan Jones in 1937 in Chester. Thomas Had the Brewery Arms in Chester Street Saltney, a family run pub of which I have a nice photo of. Another member contacted me to tell me that a Family history club had printed a small book on the history of the Brewery arms, later I was informed that the member had spoken to a lady who knew Kathleen and that she had contributed photos for the book. This club was in Saltney Ferry, at the time I was able to find on the net one page giving details that they met at the a school once a month. I then wrote to the club C/O the school waited two months then wrote again still no reply. A home address was given so I then wrote to that one, again I had no response. Both the Brewery Arms website and the info on the Saltney F.H.C.are no longer on the net. As I found out last year, so where is this club and where is the book? I am none the wiser after two years. Sad

Thanks for finding my old post,it all came back Grin I have never known a Family history club or a persons so hard to find in my  whole life Grin

They seem to have faded away I'm afraid.

From what I can recall (Saltney not being one of my old stomping grounds) all the pubs there were pretty well all local and for the working man.  May have been mostly houses to begin with.  Saltney had a fair bit of heavy industry late 19thC early 20thC, railways, chain makers especially, hard, hot, heavy, thirsty work.

Still it's always nice to have background and pictures and the like.

it must have been in the last couple of years then.Because Erin emailed me a cutting from a newspaper, that by coincidence had appeared  at the very time i was looking. They were the members of the club celebrating something.Anyway i will have once last try,and wright to the Brewery Arms, i dont think they will be able to help, worth a try though Grin.It is a beautiful pub,the only reason i have the photo is because i just typed in Brewery Arms on ask com.It brought  up an estate agents website. With photos of pubs,so maybe it was going to be re-let.I will wright a letter later and see what happens.

I see you live not far from Chester. I think the No4 bus from Chester (going to Mold )runs right through Saltney, stops beside the pub and near that library. So a trip out may prove of interest for you !

Celia,
In the current CHH News, Spring 2008 (Newsletter from Chester Community History & Heritage) the Saltney & Saltney Ferry Local History Group are listed in the Events Diary. The meeting dates given were 12th February, 11th March & 8th April, none given for May, at St David's High School. The email address for the CHH is chh@chester.gov.uk which you may already have.

Have you contacted the FHS of Cheshire they may be able to help.
HTH
Regards,
Megran.

Hey
Success at last Grin I noticed the library wasn't open the normal hours they are only open for short days.So presuming it isn't a council run library i decided to wait a bit longer.I got a reply today,it seems the librarian had been trying to contact Mr Shallcross for a few day, since she got my mail but has been unable to, What a surprise Grin Grin She is not sure if they will still have any coppies. They do have a reference copy though and she is going to Photocopy the Brewery Arms chapter. So i should get it over the weekend.
