1851 census look up new
« on: Tuesday 08 April 08 00:12 BST (UK) »

Would someone be able to look up on the 1851 census for Susan Pengelly (Pengilly)  who was born abt. 1850 (on 1881 census she was 31) . She was born in South Milton, Devon, according to the 1881 census.

Looking for her parents & any other siblings.   By 1861 the family was in St. Pancras Middlesex as  her sister Elizabeth is listed as being age 20. & born in St. Pancras.

Thank you

If she was only b 1850 - is she not with her parents on the 1861 census in St Pancras?

The 1871 has then indexed as Pangilly.  All shown as b London Middlesex except Mary & Susan

70 Aldenham St St Pancras

Mary Pangilly 40  b South Molton - see below
Susan Pangilly 23  b South Molton
John Pangilly 17
Charles Pangilly 11
Elizabeth Pangilly 9
Alfred Pangilly 8
Ann Pangilly 5

Other entries on the same page show mar or unm for marital status.  Mary is just a squiggle that could be w for widow

I can't find them in 1861

Carole

Thanks for the 1871 Census.   It looks like the Father must have died between  the 1861 & 1871 census.  I wonder where they were in 1851?

This 1861 entry has certain similarities to the 1871 but no Susan.  Indexed as Pengilly and image is Pengilly and the area was St Pancras

John Pengilly 35  carpenter b Devon
Mary  34  b Filligh Devon
Robert  12  b South Molton
John  7 b St Johns Wood M'sex
William   5  b Hatton Garden
Charles 2  b St Pancras
Mary Ann   3 Months b St Pancras

The only Susan Pengelly (or similar) in M'sex in 1861 was 22 b Devon and working as a servant in Paddington

The 1871 shows son John b London around 1853/54 so the family must have moved between the births of Susan & John

The 1851 has a Susanah Pongelly aged 8 b Tavistock visiting relatives in Chelsea

Hi,

Marriage
Mary SHAPLAND    Dec Q 1852    West London    v.1c  p.98
other names on page
John PENGILLY
Sidney Morris CORNELIUS
Helen BRICE

In 1861 I can see a Sidney M and Helen CORNELIUS  living together albeit in Somerset but it's an unusual name so there's a good chance Mary SHAPLAND married John PENGILLY.

Susan is still with the EASTMONDs in 1861  RG9/1486  f.28  p.10, let me know if you need this transcribed Smiley

I can find no reference to this Susan after 1861 so maybe she goes to join her mother and takes the name PENGELLY.

Of course this could all be coincidence Tongue Grin

Daisy

Thanks for the info.  I don't think I need it transcribed.  Maybe that is why I couldn't find a birth for Susan & Robert under the pengilly name.  What I needed was the head of the family which was John Pengilly. I think you are right about John marrying Mary Shapland because on the census it list John, being the head & Mary his wife.

Thanks again
