Rate Books - Kingston On Thames - Ratcliffe
« on: Tuesday 08 April 08 03:16 UTC (UK) »

I have a problem locating the origins of my family and a search of Rate Books has been suggested.

Several children were baptised at Kingston On Thames at the beginning of the 1800's.  I have found the relevant marriage at Hampton in 1797, but I have not been able to locate any earlier records through Parish Registers.

It has been suggested that the Rate Books for Kingston On Thames, for that period might yield something and confirm the length of time that the family resided there.

I understand that all property owners and occupiers were required to pay a rate for poor relief and that the books list the names of those who were paying the rate.

Has anyone used Rate Books for this sort of research and was it useful?

Advice Will be appreciated.
