Hi, I am trying to trace my Grandparents. The only info I have is as follows:-

Mary Welsh Born Portadown (Came to Scotland at a very early age)
They had 8? children,
Agnes (Deceased)
Cathie
Ester? (Deceased)

Hugh (Deceased)
James Deceased)
William (Deceased)
Mary (My Mum) B 1923 D 1994

My Grandmother Mary Welsh also had a son called Gerald (Deceased) before she married James.

If anyone has any Info IE dates of birth, marrage, death it would really help me build up my family tree.

My great grandparent were,

Married 1886 Saltcoats

Many Thanks

Hello Ferris,

You said William Kelly, was born 1961, Stevenston, do you not mean 1861.

By chance do you know his parents names, were they perhaps James Kelly, and Grace.

Jonn.

Hello Ferris,

Yes James Kelly, married Grizel Thomson Biggart, 19/Jan/1850. Stevenston, Ayr.

Grizel, later on used the first name Grace, i have never before heard of those two names being interchangeable, like say Janet, and Jane, or Jean.

I have them on the census, i will post later as i have to go out just now.

Jonn.

HI Ferris & Jonn

I have a couple of Grizels who later called themselves Grace, so not so unusual.

Hello Ferris,

The 1881, census for 9 New Street, Stevenston,

Kelly James, Head, Coal Miner, M. age 58 years, M. born Ireland,
Kelly Gracey, Wife M. age 53 years, F. born Stevenston, Ayr,
Kelly William, Son, Coal Miner, U. age 19 years, M. born Stevenston, Ayr,
Kelly John, Son, Coal Miner U. age 14 years, M. born Stevenston, Ayr,
Mc Callum Hugh, Son in Law, Coal Miner, M. age 21 years, M. born Kilwinning, Ayr,
Mc Callum Mary, Daur, M. age 17 years, F. born Stevenston, Ayr.

James Kelly, the father above his age fluctuates quite a bit on the different census. so i would take this age of 58 years with a pinch of salt.

Hello Ferris,

On the 1861. census index for Stevenston, Ayr, are,

Kelly James, age 30 years, Born Ireland,
Kelly Grace, age 33 years, born Stevenston,
Kelly Hugh, age 9 years, born Stevenston,
Kelly Jean, age 5 years, born Stevenston.

You will see what i mean about James, age, between 1861, and 1881, his age is out by 8 years, while Grace's, age is bang on. makes me wonder whether its a transcription error on the 1881. census.

The young Jean Kelly, 5 years of age was born as Jane Kelly, 08/0ct/1855. Stevenston, Ayr, to James Kelly, and Grace Biggart.

There is a submission on the IGI, for a Hugh Kelly, born about 1852, to parents James Kelly, and Grizel Thompson Biggart.

Other children to the couple were,

John Kelly, born 14/April/1868, Stevenston, Ayr,
Mary Kelly, Born 14/Dec/1863, Stevenson, Ayr, ( she is Mary McCallum, on the 1881 census ).
William Kelly, born 17/June/1861. Stevenston, Ayr,
James Kelly, born, 27/Dec/1858. Stevenston, Ayr, Died Young,
James Kelly, born, 17/June/1861, Stevenston, Ayr.

So James, and William, born 1861, were twins.

Jonn.

Hello Ferris,

Here is the 1851. index for Stevenston, Ayr,

Kelly James, 25 years,
Kelly Grizel, 23 years,
Kelly Jean, age 5 years.

This is only a index, gives no relationship, between those on it, the child Jean Kelly, aged 5 years, i doubt if she is the daughter of the couple, because they were only married in 1850, you would need to look at the full census on Scotlandspeople, to find her relationship to whoever.

You will also note that through all the census that i have put on here Grizel, Grace's, ages are all running in a correct order, but James, his has no consistency whatsoever, the couple lived all their lives in Stevenston, Ayr, and you will find them on all the census in that town.

Grace Kelly Biggart, died in Stevenston, Ayr, 1902. her age at death is 65 years, which is way out. this may be because whoever registered her death was unsure of her age, by this time her husband James Kelly, had passed away.

Regards,
Jonn.
