Peter Allen
« on: Tuesday 01 April 08 20:50 BST (UK) »

I am trying to discover where my gt gt gfather disappeared to between 1861 until 1901.
He was b. 1822 Harwood, Lancashire (nr. Bolton). Married 1851 and had 2 children. I believe his wife died 1857, and the children were brought up by their relatives in Lancashire. I can find no trace of him in UK census until just before his death back in Harwood in 1901. The 1901 census lists him as a retired gold miner. I wonder whether he emigrated to a gold field area?
I have posted the same request on the US and Canadian forums as I'm not sure which is the more likely!
Thanks , Maggie

Thanks, I found quite a lot of Allens in a couple of lists but sadly not a Peter!

Another long shot... try the Australian goldfields. There is a Peter Allen on a shipping list to Victoria in 1859.

Thanks Ruth, some sharp eyed person on the Australian site beat you to it! Not sure if he's the right Peter Allen as his age is younger than it should have been, but its the only lead so far!
Best wishes , Maggie.
