Hi Iain

Just ask what it is you're looking for.

robert porter born approx 1773 in Littleport, i'd like his baptismal entry..
Also the marriage register at Littleport has him marrying an Ann TOPAL from Great Gransden, i don't think this name exists in england, i had someone double check and they said the L at the end at a stretch could be an S but that is weird as well.

Its listed as Topal on Boyds marriage index. The only other name near to it is TOPPLE.

excellent, well that kind of confirms what the living and the dead think of the entry.
At least that is one good thing...some confirmation.
looking at the census returns for great gransden nothing really comes close, she was born in 1767 or there abouts. in the 1851 census she states great gransden as her place of birth.

thanks

How about Ann Tossel baptised 17 Nov 1771 at Gt Gransden. Could the double s have been written the old fashioned way which looks to us as fs, which might be misconstrued as p?

It might be useful to check the banns register at Great Gransden to see if there's an entry for a marriage to Robert Porter at Littleport

hi david.

when i looked at the inhabitants of great gransden i did think that about the surname Tossel myself, for boyd to have it as Topal as well, it must look pretty convincing.
i suppose if you say it quickly with a country accent you can get near to Tossel. i suppose i will have to go to the parish registers at some point in my life and look at all the Ann's born in a particular year and see what comes up.
Was the Ann Tossel in 1771 from the IGI ??

Yes, a lot of Tossels in Gt Gransden. I think Tossel, itself an unusual name, could easily be heard as Topal

Your venture into parish registers should start at Gt Gransden for the banns, as they should have been called there if Littleport PR says she was of Gt Gransden.

The register has been filmed by the LDS and the film notes include banns 1754-1812, so you may in be luck.

The banns may be listed on a year by year basis along with BMDs, or they could be in a run by themselves. You need to check the PR microfilm to see how they're organised.

No, banns aren't extracted onto the IGI - you need to check the microfilm of the parish register to find them
