I see according to IGI, Anns parents are Richard and Mary, Boyds index has the following.

1767 / TOSSELL  RIC/  WEBB  MARY / GRANSDEN, LITTLE / CAMBRIDGESHIRE

she was born in 1767 so she could have been their first child.
i suppose if i find banns for robert porter and ann tossel that would be just about perfect.
it's clear Topal is a non starter............ on the odd occasion that it appears in England it's as a turkish name.

at what point in genealogy do you accept it as a cert.
the only way would really be if the banns show her as tossel not , otherwise all you have is someone called ann born in the right year with a name that has a TO and and L in common. Having said that we know for sure Topal doesn't exist, and of all the great gransden names Tosel(l) is the one that draws the eye......

At least i have something to work on.
I didn't know before today that boyds marriage index had her as Topal which is good in a way as i have never seen the entry with my own eyes and at least it's corroboration.
i just need now to find enough direct or circumstantial evidence to satisfy myself.
But thatnks for all your help people.

Cheers

Your gradually chipping away at it.

Grin Grin

Going back further in time, on Boyds, the name seems to be TASSELL  Roll Eyes

Richard Tossell, 20 and wife Ann. Born in Great Gransden. Worked for John Tate of the same parish

I've just been looking for something in a census and came across a John Cross - with the first s the old style way. It could easily be read as Crop!

I wouldn't necessarily place too much reliance on an age given as 83 in 1851. Some of these oldies had a habit of exaggerating their advancing years!

Do you have the names of Robert & Ann's children - is there a clue in a naming pattern? eg did they have a Richard?

Well, ann is the first which is to be expected and then elizabeth, robert, and so on for another 4/5 . no richard though.

There are three settlement examinations mentioned on A2A - 28 Apr 1786, 21 Oct 1786 - "Ann wife of Richard", and 2 Dec 1786 - "Ann wife of Richard Tossell and child". The implication being that the child was born between Oct and Dec.

When were they (Porter and Topal) married in Littleport? Could she have been the widow of Richard Tossell? In which case she might have been born nearer to 1766 if Richard Tossell was 20 in 1786.

excellent though, that hadn't occurred to me.
they were married in 1791. i used to go to the cambridgeshire record office alot pre children. wish i was there now.
i saw those three settlement examinations..... i'll have to apply for copies see what it throws up.
i'll have a look to see whether there are any Tossells in 1841 Littleport.
