Wilcox - Wexham - Bucks 1839
« on: Tuesday 08 April 08 15:10 BST (UK) »

Hi
Can anybody HELP please
I have a copy of my Gt Gt Grandfather William Wilcox marriage cert dated 9/10/1839.  His age at the time was 27 and married Mary Start aged 28, the residence at the time of marriage was Wexham and  his fathers name on the certificate was also William.  How can I find out his mothers name and any further details of their births etc
Any info would be truly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Michelle,

What is his fathers occupation? That should be stated on the marriage cert.

Also have you tracked him down in all the censuses?  You may be lucky and he might have his parents living with him.  Otherwise we might be able to track them down searching for William Wilcox (sn) and his occupation.

I know it's not much help - other than for elimination purposes - but I just happen to have some Wexham PRs at the moment, and neither William nor Mary were baptised there.

I found the marriage and it does indeed say that they were both 'of this parish'. There are lots of parishes on top of each other in this corner of Bucks so it might be worth trying a few of the neighbouring ones like Stoke Poges, Upton Cum Chalvey and Langley Marish.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.  Roll Eyes

This is probably William on the 1881 census:

83 Brunswick St, Reading

Henry FOSTER  Head Married 47 Born:Hollington, Sussex  Gardener Dom Serv
Mary Ann FOSTER Wife 39 Born:Reading, Berks
William H. FOSTER son 20 unmarried Born: Reading, Berks  Tobacconists Asst
William WILCOX Father in Law widower 67 Born: Burnham, Bucks  Switchman GWR

So he was born in another of the parishes near Wexham - Burnham.  Grin

Many Thanks for the reply
I´ve checked the marriage cert for William (Sn) and his profession was a Dom Servant and his father William was listed as a Laborer.
Bit miffed with the census as I thought the earliest you could go back was 1837 ish? Smiley

Many thanks Gill for the info, I have traced the siblings of William (son) and one of the sisters was callled Mary Ann who I guess William (father) was lodging with at Brunswick.

Perhaps someone with an Ancestry sub might be able to find William on an earlier census when his wife Mary was still alive so that you can find out where she was born.

To find William's baptism in Burnham, you could try requesting  Bucks FHS for a name search (not much to pay) or ask if a Rootschatter is visiting the local RO and will do you a look up. I don't think Burnham baptisms are covered on the IGI.

I'm stumped on 'Devonshire St Mary's'!  Embarrassed

I can't see it in Phillimores or on the map - do you think it could just be a bad transcription of Reading St Mary's?

Perhaps the 1851 census entry might help? Undecided
