Hi Sarah, A warm welcome to Rootschat.  Umm, I think your information is a bit 'wonky'. The IGI marriage information is member submitted so very suspect!! This is the more likely marriage from the Sussex Marriage Index;
St. Gregory by St.Paul, London, 25 Jun 1750: John PAYNE, bach East Grinstead Christine TRULOCK, sp Extra Information: SSX N & Q Vol.2.p.209
Their children are recorded on the IGI as extracted records so pretty reliable & that includes your Edward 1759.
The marriage for Edward appears on the SMI as;
East Grinstead, West Sussex, 14 Oct 1789: Edward PAYNE Frances CHAPMAN, botp (B)
As you can see it says FRANCES rather than Jenny which is recorded on the extracted IGI record, so that's a bit of a puzzle

Hi Sarah
Welcome to Rootschat
Firstly if you are the Sarah who sent a message to me last night via Genes, I'm not ignoring you, I am trying to get some information together.
I have Paynes in my family and my 4 x great grandfather was Edward Payne who was 1780 to William Payne and Sarah Durrant from Ringmer. Edward married a Jane but as yet we don't know who she was.
They married about 1797 when he was 17 and presumably Jane was about the same age and had the following children - Benjamin 1798, Elizabeth 1801, Henry 1804, John 1807 (my 3x great grandfather who married Sarah Kesterton, sarah 1809 and Jane 1811 to 1813. They were all born in East Grinstead. I believe this is not the Edward that married Frances as he would have been only 9 years old when he married and a bit young to have children.
There are at least 3 Payne families in East Grinstead and an absolute nightmare to sort them out.

For once Toni I beat you to it
The burial record for Jane Payne 1813 - she lived at East Grinstead Common and was daughter of Edward and Jane Payne.

Hi Toni
I believe that half the children quoted above ie Benjamin 1798 to Jane 1811 are children of Edward born 1780 and Jane not Edward and Jenny/Frances.
I'm also wondering whether Frances is actually a mistranscription on the SMI and the parish register needs to be investigated.

West Sussex, I think you'll find Kerry. ESRO used to have transcripts on the shelves, but there's no mention of East Grinstead in their online catalogue.

Hi Phil
I'll think I'll check out whether SFHG hold EG records then, as Lewes is a lot closer than Chichester!

SFHG Library has got them on fiche up to about 1875. Another useful document that they have is a photocopy of the burial register for Queens Rd Cemetery from 1869 to 1901. The only problem is you have to know which cupboard it's hidden in.
Phil
Sorry Sarah - your thread seems to be getting hi-jacked by the East Grinstead anoraks.

Yes sorry Sarah, however I think it will interesting to try and work this one out. Is Jenny/Frances/Jane the same person considering I've been unable to find a marriage for my Edward and Jane? Who are the right parents for these children and are they related?
Any thoughts?

Hi all, I looked on the igi records on the family search.org site last night and I think that most of the children are Edward(1759) and Jane i.e. Jenny jane(she went by both names), if you look at the oldest threes records your found that the mother is jenny Chapman, then later on it said Jane payne as the motherI think maybe she started using her middle name then or there put it down wrong, I once found her full name on another record but I can't remember which it was. I dif think Sarah payne is not one of the children of Edward(1759) and Jenny jane chapman as the mother and father were william payne and Sarah .

Hi Sarah
I think you could be right and we may share an ancestor or two. The only Edward born 1780 I can find a trace of married Betty Augusta and lived in Maresfield (on 1841 and 1851 census) Not managed to find marriage or deaths to fit my Edward and Jane.
Also there is no other Edwards born 1780 to fit the Maresfield one.
So the crucial bit is proving that Frances Chapman is the same person as Jenny Jane and that she called herself Jane.
Incidentally on the East Grinstead burials that Forester sent me some time ago there is a death for an Edward buried 11 August 1836, aged 80 which makes him born 1756. Could this be a round up of figures and it is actually Edward born 1759?
