Did the Edward born 1790 marry a Mary?
I have seen a couple of census returns for an Edward and Mary with mother - Jane which fits and its just clicked this could be the right Edward and the right Jane.

Hi Kerry ,
Yes my Edward born 1790 did marry a Mary, Mary Norman born 1789, I think after Edward(1756/1759?) died she was living with her eldest Son Edward(1790) and His wife Mary Norman and also A Grandson Benejamin Payne (1824) who was Elizabeth paynes(1801) Son, I looked them up in the 1851 cenus and found it, also I looked in the 1841 one and it was just Jane(i.e. Jenny Jane Chapman) and Edward(1790) and the grandson.
Im not sure why Benejamin was living with his granmother and not his mum Elizabeth, have to try and find that one out.

Hi Sarah
Ype that's the one I found, and looks like Jane died 1857 and Edward (1790) died 1859. So Edward (1790) was brother to my John born 1807 in Lingfield who was my 3x great grandfather.

Hi Kerry ,
I made a mistake on the Grandsons brithdate(Benjamin payne) it was 1821 not 1824. I had a little look on genes reunited again and Ive got a family tree on there with peter wevers family tree and all the paynes are on there.

Hi Sarah
Some of the rootschatter gang have what we call a scavenger hunt and mine a couple of weeks ago was on my Payne family http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,294626.0.html we found most census returns and some information on the children of Edward and Jane which if you haven't already got, you might find useful.
You have to wade through quite a lot of information but it could be useful.

Sarah,
The burials I sent Kerry are on the Sussex OPC website. http://www.sussex-opc.org/ Go to Burials, then put in East Grinstead in the parish box and you can search by surname now as well, which saves trawling through all 1500 entries.
Kerry (and Sarah),
When I was doing the look-ups for the Scavenger Hunt I extracted all the Payne burials for 1840 to 1867, to save a bit of future work . If I get time over the weekend, I will post them on this thread for you both.

IHaving looked at Sarah's tree on GR I am now becoming convinced this is not my family at all.
I've been back through my early notes when I started doing my family history and I know someone told me my John Payne born 1807 was son of Edward and Jane. I remember viewing their tree. But according to my research he married Sarah Kesterton in 1834 Lingfield and this tallies up with his son John born 1844 my great great grandfather.
However Sarah has John Payne born 1807 marrying Milly Gorridge.
I looked at all the census returns I now have for my John Payne and they all say born Lingfield, not East Grinstead. So I think its back to the drawing board for me. I shall somehow have to make a search of the Lingfield parish registers and see if I can find a baptism for John there.

Thanks Phil
Very useful.
I'm going to pop into Lingfield Library on Thursday afternoon when the volunteers are in and check out the parish registers to see if I can find the parents of my John Payne born 1807. I will report back if I am successful.

Certainly will Sarah, my guess is that the lingfield Paynes were once connected to the East Grinstead Paynes but maybe further back than I first was led to believe.
