I promised I would give an update after my trip to Lingfield Library. Well I have a very enjoyable afternoon looking at old photos and parish registers.
My John appears to be baptised on 24 April 1808 in Lingfield, son of Nicholas and Sarah. Found some siblings and marriage of Nicholas and Sarah Wells on 20 April 1802 in Lingfield. I didn't manage to find either Nicholas or Sarah's baptism though but I have a start at least.

You are possibly right, I couldn't find a baptism for him on the Lingfield parish register but there is one born at the right time in East Grinstead. As I have said in the past there are bucketloads of Paynes in East Grinstead, and I imagine that is where my lot came from.

Hi Kerry ,
Glad to hear you had a successful trip, Iam currentley looking into William Payne who is the grandfather of Edward payne(1759), Im not a 100% sure but I think he comes from ticehurst in Sussex, that was the only record on the igi's that come close to William(his the father of John Payne(1725), I was right about who John Payne married Christian Tutt.
Well im glad to hear you've found the right lot, keep me update on what you found.

I'm glad you arrived on rootschat Sarah, otherwise I would still be working on an incorrect tree.
Good luck with your Paynes too, and maybe one day we will find a link.
There are Paynes in the Burwash, Ticehurst area that I have come across in the past, and I guess they probably do have a link with East Grinstead too. The William I was following born 1740 odd married a Durrant from Ringmer so it maybe that some of them moved out from the East Grinstead area.

Hi Kerry ,
Im glad I could help, It gives me somethink to do as I have just been disgnosed with M.E.(Chronic Fatigue symdrome), and by doing this it gives me somethink to do when Im not up to going out.
I think my paynes did move to Lingfield later on down the generations(With Edward1815) and also went down to devon for a little while and then lastly to Warlingham in Surrey(with Eli payne1849), which is were I came from, all my grandads generation were born in Warlingham and my dads generation as well.
I think there are quite alot of payne familys worldwide, and theres quite alot of reserach out there.

Hi Sarah
I know quite a lot of Rootschatters have Paynes in their ancestry. A very common name. And seems to be quite common around the East Grinstead, Lingfield part of Surrey and Sussex.
If you are interested I have bought from TNA and transcribed a will of a John Payne who died 1720 and I thought related to my lot but probably not now. He talks about Legsheath and Monkshill which are just south of East Grinstead. If you send me a private message with your email address I'll send you a copy.
I used to share a house with a girl with ME, she was quite ill for some years but eventually trained to be a social worker and is back to full health now, stay positive and yes family history will be a good way to keep you going when you can't go out and staying in touch with other people on roots.

Hi Sarah
At a standstill with the Paynes at the moment. Trouble is I've got a holiday coming up and I'm busy planning, packing etc After that I can think about a visit to the SFHG library in Lewes to look at East Grinstead records.
