I now have the following information that was given to me about my elusive ancestors.
James Reaper dob 3/7/1791, married to Bathia or Elizabeth Reaper dob 16/7/1792 on 12/12/1813.
I have been given the following information:-
James Reaper died 8/2/1855, Bathia Reaper died 2/5/1879.
I was also given this list of their children:-
William dob 15/5/1814 Mary dob c1816 Ann dob c1818 James dob c1820 George dob 30/9/1822 Elizabeth dob 18/9/1824 Bathia dob c1826 Barbara dob c1828
I think that all the children were born in Gamrie, Banff but need to verify this possibly by means of the census.
Is there anyone who has access to the census and can check this for me?
Regards
Linda

My Grant ancestors
|
Hi Linda
I think we communicated on genes reunited!
The only one of the family I can find so far in Gamrie on the 1841 census, is a possibility for Bathia junior. This looks like it could be her away from the rest of the family in service.
Place: Gamrie-Banffshire Civil Parish: Gamrie Address: Crovie
Robertson Elizabeth, F, 27, b. Banffshire Robertson John, M, 7 months, b. Banffshire Reaper Bathia, F, 14, Female Servant, b. Banffshire
Wil continue to look for the others.
NB, you can look for yourself, free, at www.freecen.org.uk
Best of luck
Ellen.

Hi Ellen
I've since managed to confirm quite a bit of the information I had, thanks to people like yourself who were kind enough to respond to my posting.
I also found that my G.G.G. Grandmother Bathia Reaper died a pauper in New Pitsligo, Aberdeen. I would like to take this further and maybe find out if she is on a list somewhere, i.e. poorhouse or maybe she was being helped by the church. I found it very strange though that she died a pauper as she had 10 children. They were all listed on her husband's death certificate, which in itself if very unusual. At the time of his death, the oldest was 41 and the youngest 22.
There is the possiblity that they all died before their mother, and as a result she may have been left without anyone to look after her, but this is highly unlikely.
I have tried to use the site you mentioned, but haven't been very successful with it. I have had more luck with the LDS site.
Thanks again for your help. We may meet up again soon on Genes Reunited.

Hi Ellen
So do you reckon that it's not worth pursuing this then? It's just very strange that a person should die a pauper when they have children.
If they died a pauper, then wouldn't that mean that they would be buried in a paupers grave which would then be unmarked?

The description 'Pauper' implies specifically that the person in question was receiving some sort of assistance from the parochial board. These boards took over looking after the poor after 1845 - before that it was the responsibility of the church.
The parochial board minutes are almost always worth following up, as they often contain a lot of detailed information about the pauper and their family (which can include why the pauper was not being maintained by any children).
Not all the parochial board records have survived. The Aberdeenshire ones which have survived are in the care of the Aberdeen City Archives. See http://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/acc_data/information/arc_collasrecs.asp
1855 death certificates give a list of all the children of the deceased. You don't get this information in any other year.
