I've just found an entry in the Thrussington parish registers for 1770. It reads: 'Banns between William Davison Stevenson (formerly Stinson) of Cosington and Alice Squire of this parish, married 23rd Dec 1770'
I was wondering under what circumstances somebody would have changed their name in 1770. Would it have been legal? or simply an alias? And if an alias, why would somebody wish to be known by 2 names?
I viewed the original Parish Registers today At the Records Office.
Fiche No’ D E 1704. / 4. 1st. of 2 fiches.
Reads thus :~
Page 22.
William Dawson Stevenson/commonly called Stinson Of the Parish of Cossington & Alice Squires of this Parish. Banns dully read 8th. Oct. 4th. & 11th. Nov. 1770.
Married in this Church. This Twenty-seventh Day of December.1770. By Me J. Baker. Vicar.
Both signed the register by their own Marks + times two. In the presence of :~ Thomas Cross John Draycott.
I must admit I read it as Formally at first, but I enlisted the help of the head Librarian who pointed out it was Commonly the slash / made it look like Formally.
Plus he said the because William could not write & possibly read...... Then his only method of communication was via mouth…… So when he gave the details for the Banns to the Parish Clark / or Minister These were written down as it was spoken and William might not have been able to read them so to check it was right.
With regards to Williams names ……..
I.G.I. Batch No’s ……William DAWSON.
Phillimores early Leicester Marriages ……..William Bauson Stevenson.
“ The Leicestershire Project Disc “ ……….William Danson Stevenson.
Whilst I was there I looked up the meaning of the Name STINSON. In the book “ English Surnames “ by P.H. Reaney
Stinson. :~ Son of Stephen.
I see that on Page 25 of the same Register There was a Marriage
Samuel STINSON. a WIDOWER To a Ann Besson. Both of this Parish Married by Banns Second of February 1773. Again both signed the register by their own Marks Samuel X Ann +
Wit’s :~ John Draycott . William Gardener.
So was there a Family fallout over William’s Mother dieing and his Father Samuel taking on a new Wife ?
Or was William a Baseborn child of Samuel And was adopted by a Stevenson Family. ?
Food for thought ?
MIKE.

Thanks again. I haven't looked at these mainly because wasn't aware of such books. Can you help further by explaining exactly what the Poor Law books were recording? Thanks
