George and Phoebe Pocock
« on: Wednesday 09 April 08 08:11 BST (UK) »

Hello,
Could someone help me find what happened to George Pocock and family?  In 1834 he married Phoebe Sellwood in Thatcham. In 1851 Phoebe (still saying married) was in Bradfield Workhouse as was dau Dorcas, dau Harriet, and possible sons, George and Charles. Father George is not there, and they all disppear after that. There is a widowed Phobe Pocock as a lodger in Twickenham in the 1881 census, but I have nothing to link the two Phoebes.
Regards

Hi Vicwinann,

Any idea whether Phoebe had a sister Harriet?

1871
RG10/1315 101 39
Twickenham, Middlesex
3 Brongham? Place

Harriet Hooper, head, wid, 60, Laundress, b. Berkshire Thatcham
Phoebe Pocock, sister, wid, 55, Laundress, b. do.

 Smiley

Hmmm ... the 1851 census shows a Phebe Pocock born Thatcham ca. 1815 married to a John  Undecided

Hello Tati,
Firstly the John and Phoebe Pocock is not the right one.  I have been down that route a little way.
My Phoebe was born in Chieveley 1813, and the two daughters I mentioned were born in Bradfield Workhouse, Harriet 1838, at least being legitimate to George and Phoebe, Dorcas 1847 and Charles 1850, apparently not.  Phoebe is spelt Pheby in the 1851.
Although I don't have a sister Harriet for my Phoebe, there is a gap in the baptisms between 1809 and 1813 where a Harriet would fit. I will look for a Hooper marriage for the Harriet in the 1871 and hopefully, it will be Sel(l)wood.
Thanks for that and for being so quick.
Yours

Dorcas is down as Poole in 1861 but she seems to marry as Dorcas Pocock in Sep 1870 Kensington. Slight mistranscription on FreeBMD - I think the groom is Robert Bailey.

Hello Tati,
Thanks for all that.  I have found Charles Poole on the 1881 and Phoebe was born Chievely, so that looks like the right one. Can't find a marriage on FreeBMD, though. Neither have I yet identified Robert Bailey and Dorcas or the other possible grooms in 1881. Marriage cert order, I think.
The 1861 is a bit puzzling in that it shows Dorcas and Charles as grandchildren, and Charles should be 10years old if he is Phoebe's son.
However, you have given me something to chew on and I am grateful.

They're still around in 1891 but I can't spot them in 1881 either

Re Charles. Seems he's a different Charles indeed, still with Phoebe in 1871:

1871
RG10/66 17 30
Hammersmith, London
6a Hunt St

Charles Poole, head, 55, Labourer, b. Bucks Burnham
Phoebe Poole, wife, 55, b. Berks Cheavelead
Charles Pocock, grandson, 12, b. Berks Bradfield Union

*Possible* death for Charles born 1850?

Hi Tati,
This family really do not seem to know where they were born, or when!  I had found Robert Bailey and Dorcas on the Mormon 1881 site and had earmarked it, even though Dorcas said born Reading.  That would be the nearest big place to Bradfield so it is probably the right one.
Yes, Charles Pocock is a different one, and it still says grandson.  And I have worked it out!!!

According to the transcription booklet of Bradfield Union from the Eureka Partnership, he was the illeg son of Harriet Pocock.  This must be Phoebe's daughter b 1838.  Phoebe presumably decided to also pass Dorcas off as her grandaughter.
