Shaking the Irish Family Tree from Canada

My Mysterious McPherson's, Esquising, Halton
« on: Wednesday 09 April 08 09:33 BST (UK) »

Hi there...

Okay I am in serious need of your help...I have been working on this family for years and everytime I think I get 1 step forward .... I hit another road block, I'm beginning to think there have been so many skeleton's in the cupboard, that many many stories have been told to cover them up!  so...now I'm at a point what is fact??? what is fiction?Huh

Here is the fact.....as I know it

John Duncan McPherson is my Gran's father, I cannot find him in the 1901 Census....in 1903, I have him listed at Lot 10 Con 5 Esquising Twnshp, Halton...this is entered on the Birth of his daughter Mildred 15 Dec 1903 (have the birth entry)......he is still at this location on 14 Feb 1906 at the birth of a son Charles Robert McPherson (have the birth), is in Guelph Township 18 May 1907 when the death of this son is registered. (Have Entry), in 1909 according to the Guelh Street Directory he is listed at 414 Eramosa Road, Guelph, again he is at this location at the death of a son John Duncan McPherson 19 Feb 1910.  At the time of the 1911 Census he is listed with his wife Minnie Hannion/Hennion/Hannon in the City of Guelph on what I believe reads  74 Essex Street...the entry states he is Canadian of Scotch descent, was born Sept 1874, in Ontario, and is 36 yrs, and is a Culvert Worker.  His wife Minnie states is American, born in USA Jan 1874, arrived in Canada 1902...their daughters Mildred and Mae (my gran) are also listed.

Fiction....As I have found it

Have a marriage cert for John and Minnie dated 18 Jan 1899, supposedly issued from Broome County, New York.  Believe this document is a fake, as all the writing is done in red ink, questionable at this time..I sent to the State of New York and had them search the marriage records....none found.  Have not found a marriage in Ontario either.

John Duncan McPherson, cannot find a birth for him....on the census entry says Sept 1874, Ontario, Canada,  on his death certificate that I ordered from the Ontario Government (what a challege that was), says his birth date is 22 Sep 1872.  Thought I would find out who his parents were, well was I wrong....on the death from 1946, it lists father John McPherson, mother Minnie Hannion?Huh (his wife)

On Minnie's death from 1929, she is listed as being born in Middletown New York,  7 Jan 1876, daughter of Peter Hennion and Huldah Pease, the 1911 Census says Jan 1874, and that she had been in Canada 35 yrs...the informant was her daughter Mildred.

As well, in 1921 Minnie is listed at 12 Waterloo Ave in Guelph, John McPherson is listed at 88 Queen street living with Minnie's mother Huldah Lister (widow of Thomas)...now again, things get wonkie....in 1925 Minnie lists herself as Widow of John in the Street directory....but he is quite alive at least until 1946...

I know there was a break down in the marriage/common law relationship at somepoint because John took up with a woman named Alice Hiltz(s) from Rockwood.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction, I need to be able to find John's parents info to further my search...there is a Malcolm McPherson in the 1881 Census at Lot 13 Con 5 Esquising with a son John listed as 7 yrs....this fellow dies in 1903....as well, have a photo of a wee boy William McPherson Moffatt, the daughter of this Malcolm married a Moffatt, as well a funeral card for a Robert MCPherson...so looks promising also John Duncan appears in Esquising in 1903....any advice, help....insight...at this point, I'd even accept a small miracle (lol) to sort these ones.....

I thank you for listeniing to my ramble...

Hi Wendy,

Just thinking outloud here.....

Have you checked the land records to see if there is any information for the properties at Lot 13, Con 5, perhaps there is a will on title if Malcolm owned the land?

Does Woodlawn Cemetery in Guelph have any further information on file?

Hi Karen....

Thank you for responding, believe me all thot's are welcome!!!!!

I'm off to Georgetown library tomorrow to check for the Land records for lot 13 con 5,and  lot 10 con 5 Esquising tomorrow...the ladies at  Woodlawn Cemeteries office are fabulous, extemely accomodating. and helpful, unfortunately, they have the same information that I do....I have copies of all the death certs, have not been able to find a birth entry for the son John Duncan McPherson born in 1907(got his birth date from the death Cert)....and had a quick look for my gran's from 25 Apr 1910,  in the Ontario Index's, and not found her's either...the youngest sister Ruby would have been born about 1916, so of course her birth would not be available yet.

Have recently found a Border Crossing Entry at Niagara Falls New York, for Minnie, her mother Huldah, and all the daughters dated 13Aug1921....it appears that Minnie was "Debarred" and refused entry for not being able to produce a U.S. medical certificate,( she is listed as being Deaf) states that she was enroute to visit an Aunt possibly a  Mary Sweet or Scott, but the copy of the document makes it near impossible to read the "desination" in New York.  The fact that Minnie was Deaf is all new info...have never heard of this information before...

Here is another intriguing piece to this family, the daughter Mildred born 1903 was murdered in Guelph in 1942 on Albert Street...I've located quite a few of the Newspaper articles pertaining to the event, funny thing....her parents are not  mentioned anywhere??? The story goes and is verifitied by the Newspaper articles of the time, that she was at a house party and was hit over the head by a "fire" poker and died.....

Seems the  "hidden" stories from the Cupbaord are starting to pop out...so would not be surprised  at what I find....think I may have opened Pandora's box.....lol

Wow Wendy some interesting tales.  I'm from Guelph, so that makes it more interesting for me  Smiley

I found a Wilhemena McPherson who has a father Malcolm, she says she was born in Guelph, but living in Halton county when she married, a John McPherson is a witnessess to the marriage, she married George Brown in 1887 Undecided

I just looked at the border crossing, Hulda says she was born in Fleetville, PA.  In the 1870 US census I found a Huldah Pease living in PA who is a domestic servant, have you seen that entry?

Hi Again Karen....

Have not heard of her before??? I was playing around with the Halton Newspaper site last nite...and found the Malcolm with Robert, Agnes, and John....in Malcom's obit...says that Agnes (mrs John Moffatt) was from Brantford.....now, the photo of the Wee boy William McPherson Moffatt was taken at a Brantford Photographer...looks to be early 1900's.....Photo was found in amongst old Photo's of John Duncan McPherson and Minnie Hannion...that belonged to my Granmother......so this makes me think there is a connection here.....

When I ws a little girl, my Gran had told us that she lived in the house at 414 Eramosa (Freddies' Hairstyling) at some point.... have verified this to be true....through the death cert's and street directories.....

Definitely intriguing, this family....kind of a nightmare as well.....hahahaha

Yes have the entry for Huldah....Funny thing, this marriage Cert that according to the New York Government says does'nt exist, says John McPherson, Carbondale Pa, Minnie Hannion, Carbondale Pa, were married at Windsor, Broome County New York 18 July 1899.....funny tho, can't find a marriage for Hulda to Peter Hennion, however there is a Peter Hennion listed in one of the Us Census's (can't think of the year at the moment) listed as single, 29, and a farmer....of Irish descent, and Minnie lists herself on the border crossing as "irish" descent....then again.....where does Thomas Lister come into play, can't find a marriage for him and Huldah either?

In conversation with another genealogy buff a few years ago, he enlightened me to the fact that it was "common for a quick marriage", to cross the state border from PA, into Broome County to marry???

It's all just baffling....oh what wicked webs we weave!!!!  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Further to Huldah and Pennsylvania....there is an entry from the 1860 US census...from Susquahanna, that lists a Pease family that fits..

H. Pease  50  M
M. Pease, 30  F
M. Pease  11  F (Wonder if this is the Aunt Mary???)
H. Pease,  9   F (possibly Hulda)
H. Pease,  4   M
S. A. Pease 1, M

Coincides with the 1870 entry that has Hulda as a Servant in Susquahanna???

Carbondale, PA and Windsor NY are only 55 miles apart.  Have you contacted the local registrars office in Windsor to see what they have to say?  I know for some birth, death and marriages in small town New York I've called directly and they just go and grab the books while you're on the phone.

No....Great Idea!!! Have emailed the Broome County Historian, the other day to see what I could find out from him.......I had applied and paid a fee for a search with the Stated Dept of Vital Statistics.... I'll see if I can find a number and call them....

I had tried to search for Minnie's birth, a few years ago...someone had emailed me and said that New York did'nt register births in 1874/76?Huh
