I need help reading Census documents please..
« on: Wednesday 09 April 08 09:45 BST (UK) »

Hi Everyone,

I need some help reading two census documents.  I've attached three little bits from the 1871 & 1881 census - Sheffield (I know I can't post the whole page), I was wondering if you could have a look and tell me what you think they say...

The first question is - 1881 census - what do you think the birth place is for the bottom entry. Huh

Second question is - 1881 census - what do you think the address is?  Huh

Final one....1871 census - what do you think the wife's name is?  Huh

Being a nurse and used to decifering doctor's writing you'd think I could manage this - but I'm no good at flowing text it would seem!

Thanks very much.....Cheers......JJ Cheesy

Thanks Tati. Cheesy...I do wish service in the real world was as amazing as on this forum - being from Australia, and not knowing the place names in Sheffield, decifering, particularly the birthplace was a challenge...

One other little question - does anyone know what the DO actually stands for I assume it's like " " these days...

Thank you again JJ Smiley

Comes from the Latin via Italian.  It means "that which has been said."  Or in this case written.  Smiley

I agree with Tati's 'translation'
We do learn a lot on these pages and not always about Genealogy  Grin Grin

I also woarked in a hospital (Bio-medical scientist) and I do find that I am above average at reading handwriting as a result of years of reading Dr's writing - and I've no doubt that applies to you also JJ

Not a significant difference, but I'm pretty sure the address is actually "8ho 25 Court, Carlisle St", where ho = house.

A common way of writing the address of a house in a court in Sheffield. You might see it further shortened to e.g. 8h 25ct or even 8/25, which is where it gets ambiguous.

Good Morning everyone....(well it's morning here!)... Cheesy

Thanks very much Hugh for your address decifering knowledge!

Thanks also Mumsie, I suppose you're right about our ability to read writing being pretty good, but I just don't feel very confident yet in reading these precious old documents, give me a medical chart anyday!!

Thank you everyone...you're great!! Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley
