1851 look-up John PAYTON & family
« on: Wednesday 09 April 08 10:29 BST (UK) »

Hi I am putting this here cos although in 1861 they are in Somerset according to the childrens birth places in 1851 they should be in Wiltshire - but I can't seem to see them,  can anyone find this family from 1861,  in 1851 please

from 1861 census Marston Bigot  - Nunney, Somerset

John Payton 44  Game keeper born Standewick Somerset
Sarah Payton 43  born Wiltshire cornley?
John Payton 17  "     (John Samuel Payton)reg Warminster)
Jane Payton 11  "
Elizabeth Payton 7  "
Charlotte Payton 3  born somerset Marston Bigot

the place of birth given for SArah may be wrong as in later census's she says she was born in Buckinhamshire (if it's the same Sarah)

they seem particulary reluctant to reveal themselves !

I have a vague memory of Corsely (Warminster)  being absent from Ancestry's 1851 implementation ?

Anybody got FMP version ?

I do not have access to the census but did find baptisms for the two children born Corsley, Wilts to John and Sarah Payton.

          John christened 26 Oct, 1845
          Jane christened 13 Mar, 1850

Both are extractions from the parish record.

Thanks for that Beth but I do have the entries from the IGI,  I have found the family in Corsely in 1841 with 2 older children James born 1838 and Thomas born 1840 but all it says is that non of them were born in Wiltshire,  I was hoping to find the family in 1851 to find the birth places of James & Thomas,  who were baptised at the same time as John in 1845 in Corsley.

Thanks for looking Newfster - at least I know now its not me doing something stupid,  is that bit just missing from ancestry ?  or is it missing from the census full stop?  do you know?

Its not noted as 'Missing or Wanted' in the Nat Archives Catalog - its shown as a hamlet in the Warminster PIECE #1843.

So, if there is anybody with Wilts 1851 on CD, now would be a good time to exercise it !

or maybe The Genealogist site has it ?

Looking at the census for 1881 where Sarah says she is from Buckingham, I note that she has also become significantly younger than John. In addition she also has an 11 year old daughter which would not have been possible had she just been fibbing about her age.

A Sarah Payton died Frome, JAS 1862 Vol 5c  Page 298

John Payton married Sarah Jane Stanford, OND 1863 Frome Vol 5c  Page 997

surprisingly close those villages of Standerwick, Chapmanslade and Corsely ...... right on the county boundary.
