Is there anyone who could access the records of the Beaminster Poor Law Union? My 2x great-grandfather, Luke Hogard Pine, was relieving officer ( and registrar) from at least 1851, until his death in 1857. His eldest son, Jonathan Pine, assumed the role, and was also vaccination officer; these roles Jonathan filled at least until 1891. I am seeking more information on their careers with the Union. Thanks, Darren

The Beaminster Poor Law Union records are in the Dorset Record Office, which you may already know about, but if you are looking for an employee of the Union (ie a 'service-provider' rather than a 'customer') you will probably have better luck at The National Archives. Have a look at their Research Guide on Poor Law Records 1834-1871 www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=116.
You should find the series MH9 and MH12 most useful. It is quite easy to identify the records you want to look at from the online Catalogue, but you would either have to visit in person or get a researcher to look for you. MH12 in particular is a bit of a lucky dip, but if you are lucky you may find details of both men's applications for their jobs as well as other correspondence - I have even seen testimonials and references for job applicants. But sometimes there is nothing at all.
Incidentally, I searched the A2A database (another lucky dip) www.a2a.org.ukfor any mention of Luke or Jonathan Pine and found that the Dorset Record Office has the marriage licence for Luke Pine and Francis Dowdeswell in 1835.

Hi Darren,
Have you had a look at the Beaminster page on www.opc.dorset.com ?
A great variety of information, including the details of the marriage of Luke Haggard Pine in 1835.

For what it's worth, I have just checked a copy of the Official List of Registration Officers which is undated, but seems to relate to about 1845, and Luke Pine is not listed as Registrar. Jonathan appears in the 1878 List as Registrar of Births and Deaths and also of Marriages for the sub-district of Evershot. Not all Registrars of Births and Deaths were also Registrars of Marriages.
