Hi,
I'm looking for a family of Hawkins (quite a popular name!). The family in 1871 would have been Walter or George Hawkins and Ellen (his wife). Their children at that point - Walter, James and Alice. Walter/George was born in Highfield/Ryde (it varies!) in about 1846.
I was wondering whether there was any indication on what his real name is and whether Walter had any brothers on the earlier census'.
Another theory is that Walter and George were brothers who married the same woman. Perhaps Walter died and George took over??
Any help would be appreciated,
James

This look like the best bet in 1861 but there are few Walter HAWKINS of the correct age.
RG9/658 folio 85 page 1 Taylors Beer Shop, Ashey Road, Newchurch Walter HAWKINS age 20 brickmaker born N K Hampshire boarding in the house of Charles TAYLOR brickmaker and beer seller
He's got the right occupation.

I think this is one that you will have to get the marriage certificate for to be sure you are following the correct Walter HAWKINS.
Again this looks the best bet in 1851.
HO107/1665 folio 243 page 22 Living at The Hermitage, Godshill, IOW Robert HAWKINS age 37 gamekeeper born Monden, Dorset wife Harriett age 40 Laundress born South Stoneham, Hants children Harriet 14 Charles 12 Walter/Walton? 10 George 4 all born South Stoneham William 2 born Godshill
plus farm labourer Henry BUSSELL 23, wife Charlotte 21 and their daughter Ellen 3 mths

The IOWFHS has a marriage for George HAWKINS to either Ellen HAWKINS or Ellen HAWS in a Register Office, Nonconformist or RC Church in 1878.
So it's possible that Ellen married 2 brothers but you will need to get the certificates to be sure.

Walter b 1865, James b 1867 and Alice b 1868 - mother was recorded as Howe or How on the birth registrations. Lucy was born in 1871, Emily 1876, Kate in 1878 and Charlotte in 1879. For Charlotte the other names shown are How and Hawkins.
Walter Hawkins married Ellen Howe in All Saints, Newchurch on the Isle of Wight in 1864.
Walter Hawkins died in 1877 aged 35. A Walter Smithers Hawkins was born in 1845 in the Newport area of the Isle of Wight - maybe not the right one.
A George Hawkins registered in the Godshill area in 1848.
