Just trying to find my roots!

KING/JARMAN/WHITE Bridgwater, Som and Dorset.
« on: Wednesday 09 April 08 13:53 BST (UK) »

Hi

I am researching my roots in the King famliy from Bridgwater. Walter King m. Laura Jarman (b 1862, m. 1889)

I am trying to follow Laura's family. I believe her mother was LYDIA WHITE and some basic searches throw up

CHARLES WHITE (b 1836) m. HARRIET WHITE (b .1831) of Askerswell in Dorset

The records show CHARLOTTE (b. 1803 Loders, Dorset) as mother in law, ie HARRIET's mum.

Does anyone know this family tree? I'll post it on the Somerset bit as well ...

Thanks,

Rob

Hello Rob  -  welcome to Rootschat  Grin

What exactly is it you want us to look for?

Shall we try to find Laura's family in the census 1841- 1871, or do you already have that?

It helps to know what you already have, to avoid dulication!  Try to aks specific questions : eg: please find  Charles and Harriet White in 1851/1861/1871 census

Hi there, thanks for the warm welcome.

I guess I need to find LYDIA's parents to confirm that I have it right, and then any info back from there.

Does this make sense? If you think I should take a different tack, please let me know.

Also check the Hamphire part, looking for Fletcher/Hawkins as well.

My grandmother King's family go back to SAMUEL ROOM of Bristol ... his house was the first to be attacked and set on fire in the Bristol Riots ... small claim to fame!

So, I would like to move back down the ROOM line as well.

Thanks,

Rob

Hi yes, that's her. She died in 1964 (102) got a picture of me at her 100th (12 at the time!). Her husband was Walter King, and his father lived to 107! (1814 - 1921)!!

I am doing the detective bit at the moment.  Looking for Jarman families with the right aged Laura (prior to her marriage), then checking back for marriages of the named husband and given name wife, for around the birth date of the eldest child, and then back again for parental births around 20 years before that!

Then, off to the records to confirm or deny the various (small) trees I have built up. Emphasis on "small", no sense in building large trees to just chuck away.

Hope this makes some sort of sense!

Regards

Rob

Well, I need to repeat Clair's question, because on the 1871 census there are 2 Laura Jarmans, born 1863 Bridgewater.

One has parents Edward and Sarah and the other's parents are George and Catherine  Huh  The second Laura has a middle initial S.

It is sometimes necessary to buy a certificate or two to put a family on a firm footing.  So, before we go off chasing the wrong people - can you tell us where you got the name Lydia White?

If you have details of the marriage of your Laura, the marriage certificate will tell you her father's name......

It maybe that either Edward or George, as above, were married before, to a Lydia, but we do need a firm start point.

If you are certain of the marriage, I would get that certificate  Cheesy Or - having just read your last post - buy the birth certificate which will give both her parent's names.

Hi Rob,

Have you had a look at www.opcdorset.com ?   A wide variety of information available; on the Askerswell page there are baptisms 1731-1879, marriages 1560-1835 and burials 1731-1879; various census details also.

The page for Loders also has baptisms, marriages and burials.
