KNIGHT what next?
« on: Friday 29 August 08 11:56 BST (UK) »

I am stuck with the tracing of my 5XGrandfather William Knight. He married Racheal Crisdee on 12 Oct 1807 at Holy Trinity Church, Millbrook, Hants. The PR only gives their names and the names of the witnesses, neither being a Knight or Chrisdee.

The 1841 Census show them both living in Millbrook. Will is a Last Maker, both born in the County.

The 1851 census shows Racheal is now living with a John Knight as his wife to gether with her children Rachel and John listed as his nephews! (HO107/1670/448/34 refers).

Visits to the Records offfice in Winchester revel no further info that I can find.

I live in Spain any suggests or help to:

a) Find William's parents and/or siblings

b) Find his death record, the only possibility is a record at South Stoneham July Quarter 1849, but I would have thought the death would have been recorded in Southampton, or am I wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi there

South Stoneham is/was the correct RD for Millbrook.

How old was William in 1841 - roughly.  I'll have a look for his baptism.

Hi Little Nell

I made an assumption of his being say 21 years old on his marriage, so circa 1776.

Thanks for your help

I've found Rachel's baptism - she came from Havant.

There are a large number of possible candidates for William.

Rachel and John listed as his nephews

Erm, I can't see that.  It says u in the relationship column.

Rachel Knight who was 33 in 1851 was the daughter of John & Rachel Knight baptised in 14 Dec 1817.

I think you may have some crossed wires.  Undecided

Thanks Little Nell, I'll see if I can find the hard copy, unfortunately for the time being I have had to let my sub to Ancestry lapse for the time being.

John Knight married Rachel Houghton 13 Aug 1812 in Titchfield where the two children were also baptised.

Nell.

I'm getting confused, are you saying that John Knight who was living with Racheal Chrisdee in 1851 was in fact a Racheal Houghton, and I was comletely up the wrong tree?

Yes, sorry, I am.

I've just been trying to find baptisms for William & Rachel's children and at the moment I've found 2, both a long time after the marriage.  Those children don't appear to be with their parents in 1841.

I've found the burial of one of the children (Benjamin) as a baby in Southampton.  No luck tracking the other (Rebecca) yet).

To save you wasting your time, are you checking the John Knight/Racheal Houghton children as they are not I now believe related (ubless they were cousins),. Why I ask is the first Benjamin in my tree was the son of Jabez born 5/1/1853 in Nottingham. Interestingly enough we have had a Benjamin in every generation to my father, who was the last, and he died 4 years ago aged 95.

May I ask you source for Racheal Chrisdee's birth, parents etc? I have been trying for 8 or 9 years to track her down.

Benjamin was one of William & Rachel Knight's children.  I've left John & Rachel Knight to one side.

Rachel Crisdee was baptised 3 Apr 1785 in Havant, the daughter of William & Rachel Crisdee - from PR transcript.

She seems to be their only child, but I can see numerous possibilities for different spellings.
And I don't seem to be able to find a marriage for this pair either.

How did you reach William & Rachel since they don't seem to have had any sons who survived.

Jabez James, Rachel, William, Hannah and Janet were all  from the Above Bar Ind. Church records and by census. Jabez (known as James) had 9 children, I am decended from him directly. I have no idea how long William survived

Ah, that explains a few things.  I'm only looking at the CofE records!  But where were those children in 1841 - William & Rachel seemed to be on their own.  The two that I found, Benjamin & Rebecca were baptised in 1825 and 1826, I think - a long time after their marriage.
