Just trying to find my roots!
|
Hi
I am researching my Fletcher roots. (I am a Fletcher).
My father was Leonard Bertram Fletcher from Portsmouth. He was from a big family (9). I have found his brothers Charles George Harry and Edward Gilligham (including war records etc). However, I can find no record anywhere of my father's birth - around 1919.
He went to Greenwich College at age 12. Got the DSC in March 1944. He was then a Lt. in the RN, later to become a Lt. Comm. RN.
Charles married Daisy F Ivory in 1924 and as a widower Emily Maud Chandler in 1931 (thanks to Ron).
I did find a candidate in Walsall, 1920, listed as born of mother maiden name Fletcher. He was supposedly a late child, and his mother would have been 45 at this point in time (but I wonder if there is something we don't know about his parentage - it was all kept very secret from us all).
His father should have been George Richard Fletcher and mother a "K" Hawkins.
I have a newspaper article about his DSC which says his mother was a Mrs K Fletcher. I can find Ada Elizabeth Hawkins marrying a George Richard Fletcher (1895) , and also a Kate Hawkins marrying a Charles Fletcher (1901). Edward was born 1897 which ties in.
George was a bargeman and I am trying to trace his family back. So far a Richard Fletcher from St. Helen's IOW, who was also a bargeman appears to be a likely candidate.
Anyone with any info on this FLETCHER family would be gratefully received. There are a few FLETCHER families in Portsea at this time, so care has to be taken to unravel them ... probably all related somehow though.
The HAWKINS family are from Ireland (Cork?). So, again, anyone with any info here VERY gratefully received.
Thanks for reading this
Rob

Hi
Yes, Charles was born in 1900 and died in 1948. First child Edward 1897, my father (died 1981) was born around 1919. The newpaper article says he was 25 when got his DSC in 1944.
I believe their names were Edward, Charles, Frank, Lily, Violet, Daisy, xxx, xxx, Leonard.
I think is was Frank I met at my father's funeral ... he would be 109 by now!
The problem is that a George Richard Fletcher married Ada Elizabeth Hawkins (details passed to me), 1895. Mother of Charles and Edward ...
But also a Charles Fletcher married a Kate Hawkins in 1901.
The newspaper article says his mother was Mrs K Fletcher.
So, was he the son of Charles and Kate? If so, then why was he with the other Fletcher's and how come the newspaper says K Fletcher ... it also mentions Charles and Edward as his brothers?
Confusing finding family as the birth records show various Fletchers born to a Hawkins. But, the family tradition does seem to be to use flower names for girls!
I guess I need the BC of the Walsall L B Fletcher, mother maiden name Fletcher, and perhaps if this is a flower name, I may be closer to solving the issue. I did not find a BC in his belongings after he died, even though he hoarded every bit of paperwork imaginable.
All very strange ...
Regards
Rob
