Just trying to find my roots!

FLETCHERS of Portsea
« on: Wednesday 09 April 08 14:17 BST (UK) »

Hi

I am researching my Fletcher roots. (I am a Fletcher).

My father was Leonard Bertram Fletcher from Portsmouth. He was from a big family (9). I have found his brothers Charles George Harry and Edward Gilligham (including war records etc). However, I can find no record anywhere of my father's birth - around 1919.

He went to Greenwich College at age 12. Got the DSC in March 1944. He was then a Lt. in the RN, later to become a Lt. Comm. RN.

Charles married Daisy F Ivory in 1924 and as a widower Emily Maud Chandler in 1931 (thanks to Ron).

I did find a candidate in Walsall, 1920, listed as born of mother maiden name Fletcher. He was supposedly a late child, and his mother would have been 45 at this point in time (but I wonder if there is something we don't know about his parentage - it was all kept very secret from us all).

His father should have been George Richard Fletcher and mother a "K" Hawkins.

I have a newspaper article about his DSC which says his mother was a Mrs K Fletcher. I can find Ada Elizabeth Hawkins marrying a George Richard Fletcher (1895) , and also a Kate Hawkins marrying a Charles Fletcher (1901). Edward was born 1897 which ties in.

George was a bargeman and I am trying to trace his family back. So far a Richard Fletcher from St. Helen's IOW, who was also a bargeman appears to be a likely candidate.

Anyone with any info on this FLETCHER family would be gratefully received. There are a few FLETCHER families in Portsea at this time, so care has to be taken to unravel them ... probably all related somehow though.

The HAWKINS family are from Ireland (Cork?). So, again, anyone with any info here VERY gratefully received.

Thanks for reading this

Hi - you say he was one of 9, and a late baby.

therefore it is possible the family may appear on 1901 census.
If Charles was married in 1924 for example, he must have been a lot older than Leonard.

Do you know the names and d-o-b's of the other 8?

If you are not sure that any are deceased, then do not post their detials here.

Are their births indexed with mothers maiden name Hawkins?
Have you got any of their birth certs to confirm both parents names?

the most likely looking marriage for this couple is:

Apr/MAy/Jun 1895
Portsea island ref 2b 968

George Richard Fletcher
also on page Ellen Webber

which shows that this George R was a George Richard

... and the births:

Charles George H Fletcher
Jan/Feb/AMr 1900
Portsea Is ref 2b 501

Edward Gillingham Fletcher
Oc/Nov/Dec 1897
ref 2b 503

so that family in 1901 seems pretty sure to be them.

So the wife is Ellen nee Webber

Hi Liz

Looks spot on to me ... 17 Wells St is correct! I have this from the War Records for Charles and Edward.

All with mothers maiden name Webber

Eva Jan/Feb/Mar 1912
George T H oc/Nov/Dec 1914
Richard S jul/Aug/Sep 1917
Albert W Jul/Aug/Sep 1921

so it looks like a) yuor dad was not the youngest and b) George ddint remarry but was still with Ellen nee webber at least till 1921

So ... now the question ...

Why did the newspaper article say his mother was Mrs K fletcher, living in Manor Road (in 1944)

There is also a May E bn Ap/MAy/Jun 1917, mums maiden name Webber, but in Southwark

Either there is another Fletcher/Webber couple around at the time, or George and Ellen were in London in WW1 era (well, at least Ellen was when she went into labour)

I found Kate and Charles and she was listed as born in Ireland.

But it's still strange why he's not listed in the BMD's ... mind you there's a gap for him at 1919!!!!

And where are Lily, Violet and Daisy. I visited them once when I was very young, and remember an
Auntie Vi and Lily!

r

PS My mum is pretty sure as well hsi mum was a Kate

Hi

Yes, Charles was born in 1900 and died in 1948. First child Edward 1897, my father (died 1981)  was born around 1919.
The newpaper article says he was 25 when got his DSC in 1944.

I believe their names were Edward, Charles, Frank, Lily, Violet, Daisy,  xxx, xxx, Leonard.

I think is was Frank I met at my father's funeral ... he would be 109 by now!

The problem is that a George Richard Fletcher married Ada Elizabeth Hawkins (details passed to me), 1895. Mother of Charles and Edward ...

But also a Charles Fletcher married a Kate Hawkins in 1901.

The newspaper article says his mother was Mrs K Fletcher.

So, was he the son of Charles and Kate? If so, then why was he with the other Fletcher's and how come the newspaper says K Fletcher ... it also mentions Charles and Edward as his brothers?

Confusing finding family as the birth records show various Fletchers born to a Hawkins. But, the family tradition does seem to be to use flower names for girls!

I guess I need the BC of the Walsall L B Fletcher, mother maiden name Fletcher, and perhaps if this is a flower name, I may be closer to solving the issue. I did not find a BC in his belongings after he died, even though he hoarded every bit of paperwork imaginable.

All very strange ...

Regards

Rob

Ada Elizabeth Hawkins is certainly another name on the same page as the George Richard marriage (along with Ellen Webber, Sidney Counter, and William Richard Davidson, there must be one bride missing)

Without gwtting the mariage cert of George Richard Fletcher you wont know for sure which he married (eith Ellen W, Ada E H , or the missing bride) but the evidence from the 1901 census indicates that it was Ellen Webber he married.

Hi Claire ...

Wow! This looks like him ...

I need to order this BC and also Charles or Edwards to clear some of this up.

The "flower children" are Hawkins from what I can find ...

But the newpaper article clearly states that his brothers were in the "last war", and gives the right sets of initials which ,atch up with the role of honour and street address.

Why could I not find this record? I have been searching for a vey long time now!
