Hi there
Just wondering whether there has been any news or progress on this story abut the prison records? I was relieved to hear that the auction had been postponed, but is there any indication what the 'vendor' intends to do now? Since he's been told they could be worth £4,000, I'm guessing he will try to push for another sale somehow.
I'm nowhere in the same sphere as Bernie Taupin (incidentally, didn't even know he was a Yellow Belly!), but if the Lincolnshire Archives (or indeed anyone else) intends to put together a fighting fund to purchase them, let me know and I'll be a happy contributor.
These documents deserve to be kept in Lincolnshire for the general public to access and use!

Just been alerted on the bbc site. This is terrible! These records are public records (unlike a family bible) and public history and belong in the national archives, wherever they may be stored, for eg Lincoln.
The person who has possession of them is not to be blamed for wanting to sell them, another sort of person might just have dumped them in the bin/on the bonfire etc. They should be paid for from public funds, ie our money, and the information made available to all.

There's a lot of loose talk on this site about stealing the records without a shread of proof one way or another. It is true that lots of public bodies dispose of "surplus" records at little or no value, and perhaps this is what happened here years ago. I certainly think no one should be talking about theft until the facts of the matter have been established. This reminds me of a case in the west country (Truro maybe) not so long ago when the council got rid of a load of "old books". A local bookdealer brought the lot at a knock down price then preoceeded to sell them individually at auction raising over £500,000. Needless to say he has now retired .
It is a shame that the person who now has custody of the records apparently did not make an approach to the archives before deciding to sell them. Even if the Archives themselves don't have the money this is what The Heritage Lottery Fund and the National Heritage Memorial Fund excists for. To them £4,000 is a mere drop in the ocean of their vast reserves.
I suspect now the case is getting a lot of publicity there will be a happy outcome - i certainly hope so.

Morning all!
I contacted the Lincolnshire Archives yesterday and this is the reply they sent me:
Thank you very much for your enquiry and interest in this matter. I have consulted with our Press Office and they have provided the following statement as Lincolnshire County Council's position on the sale - "We are aware of the prospective sale of historic prison records, and we have sought advice from The National Archives who have strongly suggested that they should be considered to be public records.
This material is historically significant and we feel that it would be in the public interest for it to be housed at Lincolnshire Archives where it can be made freely accessible to the public.
We are happy to work with the vendor and The National Archives on this matter."
Thank you again for your enquiry, and I shall endeavour to keep you informed of developments.

Hopefully this will create more of a stink, and make sure the records are eventually taken to their rightful place - Lincoln record office.
Maybe once the owner has had time to reflect on the importance of the records, and how much he will disappoint hundreds of people, he will change his mind.

Good news everyone!
I have just seen the latest edition of BBC Look North. The Ministry of Justice has stopped the sale and the books will go on display at Lincolnshire Archives and the Usher Gallery in Lincoln next month.

That's very good news. Quick work as well, to be on display next month.
I just wonder what the 'ministry of justice' has to do with national archives
