criminal records found in attic
« on: Wednesday 09 April 08 16:08 BST (UK) »

 Hi,  Smiley

Just thought I would share this with you,  Smiley

Lincolnshire echo today 9th April. Seven books dating from 1790 TO 1875, which have come from Lincoln castle, (  when it was a prison )
are to be auctioned on Saturday, they include prison ledgers, photographic journals and debtor ledgers, guide to prison rule's,
record's of prisoners being transported to Australia, etc etc,

hope someone from rootschat  bid's and get's them,  then we will maybe get to see the imformation these 7 ledgers hold,

Eilleen.

Hi Eilleen

What a shame that they can't go into Lincoln Library or similar.

Hi Eilleen,
Wonder who's selling them - I would have thought if they came from the castle that they would go to the county record office.
Who administers the castle?
Such a shame Sad
Kind regards,

Paulene,

the son of a gentleman who had been deputy goveronor at Lincoln prison during the 1960's and 1970's, he found them in the attic while clearing his late father's home. they are being auctioned by Unique auctions , near Lincoln.

normally they would expect to fetch £3oo to £500  but think they will go upto £4000.00

     and then rest  Roll Eyes

Pity he didn't give the archives office an opportunity to photograph some of it first, but then perhaps he thought it would put down the value!

The Echo comments are about angry sounding Roll Eyes

I think, he should have the right to sell them, but maybe with the proviso that they are copied by the archives dept,
so people like us can enjoy them. Smiley Smiley

if I had the money , I would buy them , and share them with you lot  Wink

Totally agree - that he should be allowed to sell them, but let them copy them first.
Don't know if any of the rootschatters can afford that amount! But, I could be wrong.

Hi again Eilleen,
Sorry - been out to family istory group + just got home.
No I don't think that's the case - it gives people a chance to know what is happening and to make their views known. Especially important if they live in that area.
People need to know what's happening.

It would be a shame if there was no record at all of them in the record office, copies or the genuine article.  Such a waste for the many people who could benefit from them.

Surely the person who wins the auction would feel the same way, and make sure the record office is in some way involved.

Suppose there's always a possibility the person who bids might buy with the intention of putting them online, perhaps with a view to charging. More of that is happening now. Who knows!
People buy these things for all sorts of reasons.

Three cheers for the Lincolnshire Echo.
Now the news is public, Lincolnshire Archives are very much aware of the prison records and are checking the legalities for the guy being able to sell them as his father's property.
Actually I would have thought the auction house would have been very cautious about selling stuff like that without checking it with Archives/the city council first.
Eilleen - us out-of-county people would very much appreciate any updates you see in the Echo, please.
