Pam and all,
have just had a look at the echo site, but nothing seem's to be mentioned about the ledger's today,
I am wondering whether to go to the auction 
but OH say's I am likely to get carried away, and my bank account would not beable to cope

I suppose we've all got our own private collections to some point - ie. somone has the family Bible that someone else in the family would love to have, etc, etc.
I'm hoping that if the Record Office doesn't get access, then at least the person who does get it will give others access - I mean, is it better to pay small price and get access, rather than get nothing at all? Perhaps it is - what do others think?

I think I would be happy for the fellow to sell the items provided that Archives can first of all make copies. It would be nicer if the actual documents could be retained by Archives, but on the other hand how many of us would actually get to even see let alone use the original books? (Unless they went on display at the Castle/Museum.)
We have to look on the bright side - at least these documents have now been found. And if, as it said in the Echo, the father took the books etc from the scrap heap, then the alternative is that the items would now be in some landfill site and lost forever.
Though the bit about the being rescued from the scrap heap doesn't quite gel with the son being surprised to find the stuff in the attic. i.e. if he didn't know about the books, how does he know his father rescued them unless his father left a letter to that effect? (Or unless his mother told him.)

Just because he worked for the prison authority, how does that give him the right to keep records that don't belong to him. Wouldn't that be classed as stealing? What if a prison officer today took records from the prison he worked in? Wouldn't he be in trouble??
Baffled as to how there is any question that it would be ok to sell them as they are not personal belongings of the person/persons relative in question 
I hope the Archives claim them...

As I see it a basic problem is that we don’t know enough about the circumstances in which the records were disposed of in the first place. It is possible that if the governor hadn’t rescued them, they could have been lost forever.
We’ve all walked past skips for example and thought.. ‘They’re not really dumping that are they? I can find a good home for it’. We rescue and recycle ’it’, but I believe this is still technically theft, although most people would morally support it.
From early posts it looks as if some of the records could well have been about or indeed less than 100 years old. I don’t know if there is some time limitation about disclosure in these cases, perhaps someone on RC knows? This might give Lincoln Castle a basis for reclaiming the records and they could go to the archives.
Can archives actually ‘claim’ material or does it have to be donated to them? I once arranged for some non-controversial government documents to be passed to a county archive. There is no way they would ever have known about the documents if hadn’t organised it.
I go along with the view of the majority of the posters so far that the records should go to the archive now their existence is known.

Has anyone got an email address for Bernie Taupin? He's the only mega-rich Lincolnshire person I can think of that wouldn't miss 4K if he bought the records and then donated them to Lincolnshire Archives. (I know he ain't mega-rich compared to Elton, but he's mega-rich compared to me! )
Or can anyone else think of someone rich with Lincolnshire connections who wouldn't miss a few grand?
On a serious note, good going by the Archives, and I think the objection might be a way of buying time while further investigations are made into the legal side of ownership of the documents. Hopefully the objection will make people think twice about wanting to put in a private bid. If the Archives could come to an agreement whereby they purchased the documents for say, a thousand quid, I would be quite happy to contribute a few quid to the kitty.
