MAIDSTONE and surrounds
« on: Wednesday 09 April 08 17:20 BST (UK) »

I have been `stuck` on my Welch ancestors for many years. Charles Welch (Welsh) was my gggrandfather. He said that he was born in Maidstone c1805. Any sightings of this man in any Parish Record in the Maidstone or surrounding areas would be greatly appreciated. Huh

The IGI for Maidstone includes baptisms 1804-1812 but I can't see  a Baptism for Charles WELSH/WELCH.  Huh

Thanks for your reply. I have tried the IGI but could not find him either.  On all the census returns he says that his birthplace was Maidstone. Maybe I should look outside the Maidstone area. Huh

If he says he was born in Maidstone then that's where it should be. Huh

There are plenty of non-conformist records for this period on the IGI.

The KFHS have transcribed All Saints baptisms 1770 - 1812.  They might be worth checking out in case he was a few years older than he said.

Looking at batch number C042598 (Maidstone baptisms 1804-1812) there is a Charles WELCHGRAY baptised 1804 with a possible sister, Louisa, 1808 - I wonder if these should be "Welch GRAY" (parents William & Jane) - I've never come across WELCHGRAY as a surname before.

Have a play around with the IGI batch numbers for Maidstone by just entering first names of parents ie. William & Jane and see what GRAY/WELCH entries come up http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,283808.0.html

It certainly looks promising.  Cheesy

I'd like to see the original parish register entry.

I have promised myself a trip to the S.O.G next week as I had a yearly subscription from my daughters as a Christmas present. I am going to look at the Parish Records that they have there.
Charles called his 1st daughter Jane (my ggrandmother) so maybe she was named after his mother.
Again many thanks to all who have helped. Smiley

Yes, me too.  There was a thread the other day telling of a possible similar tale:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,295204.0.html

Hope you have a productive time Marianne - do they have the Maidstone registers there?

Yes I am 99% sure that they have them. I did try to have a look last time I went but the records were very difficult to read. I now have a good reason to stay the course and find the records to either prove or disprove that this is indeed MY Charles Welch.

There are Welch families having children baptised in All Saints, Maidstone (no-one called Welsh)

The only Charles is this one:
3 Jun 1804  Charles son of William & Jane WELCHGRAY
Born 16 Apr.

There's also a Louisa, dau of this couple, & a Thomas & Eliza, children of William & Jane WELCH.

Betty, thanks for the information. I can find no other references to the name Welchgray so wonder if it should be son of William Welch and Jane Gray. My ancestor said on all the census returns that he was born in Maidstone.

I can't see a WELCH/GREY marriage on the IGI. Sad

There are some GRAYS marrying in Maidstone at that time (Ann 1797, Mary 1793, Rose 1805 & Thomas 1810).

casalguidi may know the answer to this Wink -

M020079 (marriages 1770s-1812 for All Saints, Maidstone) is one of the recently added batch numbers.  The entries only go up tp SUTTON.  Are the rest of the records missing or part of another batch number? Huh

The Society of Genealogists has the BTs for Maidstone All Saints and as I recall aren't the most legible records in the world.

The PRs are still in the custody of the incumbent and were only filmedfairly recently (the floods of a few years ago concentrated peoples' minds). The Centre for Kentish Studies has the film and it's much easier to read.
