Looking for help and guidance. On my great great grandfather’s 1899 death certificate his age was given as 70 making his date of birth about 1829. The Census Returns, all for Lochmaben, from 1851 through to 1891 would give a birth date between 1826 to 1829. His parents were John Graham and Margaret Bryden and they were married in Lochmaben in 1810. I’ve searched the I.G.I. for his birth or a christening but all I found for John Graham and Margaret Bryden were Catherine Howieson Graham born 28 September 1811 and Catherine Graham born 14 January 1813 both Lochmaben. I’ve also been to Register House in Edinburgh but only came up with both Catherines. Any suggestions as to where to find or possibly find John’s birth or christening notice or any other siblings would be greatly appreciated.
This is the official website for Scottish records. It is a pay per view site but you may think it is worth it. The certificates and records can be downloaded. Registration in Scotland started in 1855 and so all you can expect to find is the entry in the appropriate register - in this case the baptism register. The entry may show the birth date but this was often at the whim of the local church authority/minister
I went into the site where the index can be accessed for free. Based on his being 24 in 1851 I asked for a search for a John Graham born in Dumfries (County) and Lochmaben (District). It said there was one entry. I need to get some more credits so I did not look further.
You say you have his parent's details. Was this as a consequence of your Edinburgh visir?
I've visited Scotlandspeople often and been to Register House lots. I've just had a look on Scotlandspeople for the entry you mentioned but the parents are Andrew Graham and Isabella Smith. The information I have with regards to John Graham and his parents John Graham and Margaret Bryden was from John junior death certificate in 1899 and the Old Parish Records for 1810 Lochmaben for his parents marriage. I am wondering if there maybe non conformist records for the time period and if there was would you know how I could get access to them ?.
