No ships into Saint John?
« on: Wednesday 09 April 08 20:15 BST (UK) »

I can't even find any ships arriving at the port of St John at ArchiviaNet...the people I'm looking for lived in St John so wouldn't they have immigrated directly into St John??

We need a smiley banging its head on the desk Tongue Tongue Tongue

Cheers,
China,
again Tongue

There are some Atlantic Crossings on Ancestry, do you have access to that?

Who are you looking for?

I have World Ancestry, you'd think I'd be able to find something, but noooooo Tongue

I'm participating in my own Scavenger Hunt.....by myself...everyone's terrified of it... Grin

According to the 1881 census, George Moore (born in NB) and his wife Mary (born in England) had a son William (born in England) in 1865, and then a daughter (born in NB) in 1867. Sooo...you'd imagine they would have arrived in Canada in 1866 or so.

But I can't even find a ship arriving directly into St John. They all seem to have gone into Quebec.

To make things easier, Mary may not have been married to George, and her maiden name may have been Addison. Or not. Tongue Tongue Tongue Tongue Tongue

Cheers,
C

There is a gap in the passenger records for Saint John, NB between 1860 and 1900. Also ships tended to come to Saint John from the UK during the winter months when the Gulf of St Lawrence is iced up, from about May onwards they went to Montreal or Quebec City.  But not everyone who came to New Brunswick sailed into Saint John, many came through Hailfax in Nova Scotia or through Montreal or even through US ports such as Boston or Portland or occassionally through New York so it might be worth looking at US sites.  Collections Canada has details of what's availble for Canada and many of the Halifax records are online.

PS it is Saint John, NB St John's is in Newfoundland

Thanks Carolyn, I'll see if I can find anything elsewhere.

If I spelled it with a K, do you think I might get some takers, Karen? Grin

So, are there any emigrant lists, in Britain?

What were George and Mary's dobs?, do you have the names of any other children? I will see what I can find in New Brunswick.

Well...this is from the 1881 census, and they are in Quebec by then. There is more information on the Scavenger Hunt, but this is the short version:

1881 - All are surnamed MOORE

George Moore     38  Tinsmith b. New Brunswick (b 1843)
Mary                 36  b. England     (b 1845)
William Henry      16  Servant   b. England (b 1865)
Annie Walker      14   b. New Brunswick       (b 1867)
George Thomas   11   "      (b 1870)
Mary Isabella       9    "    (b 1872)
Eddy Vicar          5  b. USA     (b 1876)
Frank Wesley       3  b. Quebec       (b 1878)
Edward Harlon     5 mths  b. Quebec (b 1881)

The Hunt is in the Common Room, if you'd like to take a look...

Cheers,

Hi China,
One branch of my ancestors' family ended up in St.John, and still live there today.
I know they went to America first - one brother stayed in the United States, and the other travelled on further to New Brunswick. This was in the 1920s(bit later)Travelled to New York from Liverpool.
Kind regards,
