Hi,

Thank you for that Irene Smiley

But if someone can help with the dates, that would be great. The download has the photographer "Robert Brown" of "Inverurie", on both photos but they are in different style, which might help some knowledable person with the dates?

Thank you,

Hi Grothenwell

The bottom one would be circa mid-1890s because of the sleeves. I think the first one is earlier. She still has a little bustle  - possibly  1885-ish.

Hi,
I'm in agreement with Gadget:
1880 -1885 for first
1895 - 1901 for second
Hope this helps,

The first photo shows a mid-1880s bodice, sleeving and hairstyle...the shoulder seam on the woman's dress does not have the puffy "kick up" that started in 1889. Also the man's vest does not have an extra hole for his Albert or watch chain, which became popular in 1888. So the clothing at least predates 1888.

The second photo shows the leg-of-mutton sleeves on the dress, which was popular between 1893 and 1897.

Cheers,

Thanks folks,

You are brilliant.

It really wasn't the result we wanted as we had thought that the lady in the second photo was our 2 x Gt grandmother, but she died in 1878 aged 42, so I think we can rule that one incorrect. Still better that than believing a falsehood.

Is there a chance that the first phot could be as early as 1878?

Thanks,

The Oxford style tie didn't become popular with the general public until about 1888 added to the woman's dress this is where I'd date this.

Also, I'd put the first woman as a lot younger than 42 and the older woman, older than 42.
