Callander family Falkirk
« on: Sunday 24 February 08 09:40 GMT (UK) »

Was wondering if there was anyone that could assist me in regard to James Callander Inkeeper at Falkirk and his wife Janet Young.  As far as we know they were buried at the Falkirk Parish Churchyard in 1840.

We think James Callander was born around 1797 at Falkirk.

We would particularly like to know the name of the Inn that he was operating, and for the length of time.  Jan

Try the Falkirk museum.  Oddly enough it is located in  CALLANDER  House !!

The web site is :-http://www.24hourmuseum.org.uk/museum_gfx_en/SC000083.html

I have found them to be exceptionally friendly and helpful and I live in Canada!!

Here is another wee piece of information.

On Scotland's People you will find a will for John Callander, Vintner, spouse of Janet Young dated 1849.

You can find Scotland's People at :- http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

A will can sometimes provide lots of information, almost certainly the name of the inn.

Good hunting,

Rob.

Hi Jan,

I can't help you with any info about the Inn, but I found a birth of a James Callander in 1797, Falkirk in the British Vital Records Index.

James Callander, born 15th June 1897, 16th June 1797 at Falkirk,  to parents Alexander Callander and Margaret Cowan.

There are actually two entries but I think it'll be the same birth as all the details are the same apart from the christening date, which is listed as 17th June 1797.

Do you have a note of James & Janet's children?  If not, the two I could find were:

Helen Morton Callander, born 15th November 1827, christened 9th December 1827, Falkirk
and
Alexander Callander, born 14th March 1829, christened 29th March 1829, Falkirk.

Hello

And my tuppenceworth.  No Inn information.

From the various IGI entries - there are a mixture of 'submitted' and extracted ones.

'Extracted' entries has

Helen Morton Callender born 21 April 1833, Cadder Lanark, Scotland  (is this your one? - same parents names).

Alexander as above.

Marriage 03 Aug 1826, Falkirk, Stirling - 'extracted' - from the IGI

My ggg-grandfather was James Callander who was married to Janet Young. Picked up the info on your page that his father was Alexander Callander and mother was Margaret Cowan. Would love some info beyond that. Cheers. Dave (Australia).

Hi Dave,

Welcome to Rootschat!

No further info other than what's been posted already I'm afraid.

If these families were buried in Falkirk Churchyard, there are very few stones left. It was cleared some years ago.

There is one Callander stone but it's inscription is almost completely eroded. I don't think it's either of the couples mentioned but could be another member of the same family. All that remains is:

"Sacred to the memory of JOHN CALLANDER Esq., of Woodburn
Who died ..? May 18??    .............?
And of AGNES ..........? his spouse who died  .......? aged 42
MARY …. only daughter who died ........? aged 18?
......... aged 41
.......... son  ........."

Camelon (Falkirk) Cemetery is full of Callanders but without knowing which ones would be of interest to you, bombarding you with details might just confuse matters completely! I have about half a dozen MI's from stones there and another half a dozen with people who have Callander as a middle name. If you want a copy of these, send me a PM with your personal e-mail and I'll forward copies. From memory, I think Camelon Cemetery was established around the 1870's, but now and again there's people mentioned on the inscriptions who died before this date and were buried elsewhere.

Hi APAnderson,

Thanks for this information, yes that confirms the information I have at the moment, sorry I've not answered before, only just getting messages through, for some strange reason.

Thanks for the info Anne.
Hi Jan,
I think your husband’s grandfather is the younger brother of my Great-Grandfather Alexander who was born in 1873. His brother James was born 1875 and died 26/11/1930 aged 54. He was married to Mildred Mary who died August 9, 1953. Also had two other younger siblings - Sarah married to Walter Westcott in 1899 and Annie Callander married to Prosper F. Guy in 1912.

I managed to trace my family way back to the 1500s on ancestry.com.au. Here’s a rundown so far from just the paternal side. If you put some details of your husband’s grandfather or beyond you should be able to link up with what I have completed so far. My grandfather was James Callander born 1909 in Sydney. His father was Alexander D. Callander (siblings > Christina, James, Sarah & Annie). My gg-grandfather was Alexander Callander (born Falkirk 14/3/1829) son of James Callander (born 15/6/1797 in Falkirk. He was either the innkeeper or vinter). Son on Alexander Callander born Falkirk 27/1/1754. Son of John Callander born Falkirk 1718. Son of Alexander Callander born 11/10/1681, Falkirk. Son of Thomas Callendar born 25/12/1645 Falkirk. Son of John Callendar born 5/2/1602 Falkirk,. Son of James Callander born 1572 in Falkirk and married to Margaret Mitchell born 1573 in Falkirk.
I’m from Sydney, Australia. Cheers!
(PS> I am expecting my third child any time. I am hoping it is a boy so I can call him Alexander.)
