Marcellus Smith
« on: Saturday 12 April 08 11:13 BST (UK) »

I've researched my grandfather's line pretty much as far as I can as his grandfather came from Ireland, however I was wondering if anyone can throw any light upon my grandfather, and fis father's christian name of Marcellus.

In the family we were always told it was French, however I've looked up some baby name books/websites and all say the name is Latin and/or German in origin.

Then during my research I find that my 2x and 3x great grandfathers are from Ireland and called Francis. I'll sketch out the relationship below.

Francis Smith - Ireland father of:

Francis Smith Married Margaret O'Neil - Drumore c1892 - Moved to Scotland 1892-94 had sons and daughters incl:

Marcellus Smith Met Jeannie Nisbet then died in 1927 shortly after conception of

Hi Snimmo

I think you are correct with the origins of the name being Roman/German in origin. Marcellus was the pet name for Marcus (Mark). Were your family of Roman Catholic origin? I say that because there were a number of Popes called by that name... Smiley

Regards.

Thanks for your input Monica

I don't think they are Catholic as any marriages I've found have been Church of Scotland, on the other hand Francis and Margaret's first two children were born (just after they arrived in Scotland) in Winchburgh which had a big Irish catholic immigrant community.

At some point I plan to go over to Belfast to look into things further.

By the time we get down to my mum or even my grandfather's generation I don't think there was much contact between the Smiths and the Nisbets, however my mum's great auntie on the Nisbet side still remembers the Smiths so I'll ask her if the were RC.
