Lunatic asylum South Weald
« on: Thursday 10 April 08 03:31 UTC (UK) »

Hi Listers,

My gt. grandfather is recorded as an asylum attendant on a marriage certificate of 1915. At that time he and his family were living in Barley Lane, Ilford Essex (also recorded on a naval record as Barley Lane Goodmayes Essex).

Any ideas on which asylum?

I'm not familiar with the area and so much stuff is popping up on the net that I think someone with more local knowledge of the area might be able to point me in the right direction

Hi Keldon,

Thanks again for a super fast reply - I would never have thought of clicking on a link for West Ham.
I will be forwarding the link onto some of my relatives, the more senior members of the family remember visits to Barley Lane - some of us are meeting this weekend so no doubt we'll  have lots of stories about the visits.

Thanks so much again for your help.

Best Wishes Yvonne   Smiley Smiley

Hello There,

Just found your entry of oh, so long ago, about Goodmayes Asylum, you might be interested to know it no longer exists as an asylum, about 15 years ago (?) it became King George Hospital, a general hospital for the Ilford area, the previous King George Hospitl was a Victorian edifice located on the Eastern Avenue right next door to Newbury Park Underground Station.

Regards,
