Help please! I am trying to find Agnes Divall's husband....... I have found two possibilities in the BMD. I have tried various combinations in the censuses after the marriage date, but nothing seems to fit!
This is what I have found :
Registered September 1869 :
BIGNELL Thomas Reigate 2a 223 Budgen John Reigate 2a 223 Divall Agnes Reigate 2a 223 GUMBRELL Rhoda Reigate 2a 223
Agnes was born in 1850 in Nutfield, Surrey. Parents James Divall and Emily Randall.
I would be very grateful if someone could sort it out for me.
Many thanks
Tilly
ps - I've tried IGI, but they have nothing under Agnes Divall................

Hello Valda
Thank you very much for the information - however, I can find them in 1881, but still cannot see them in 1871. I have put in all the info you gave me, but still nothing comes up (I am using Ancestry). Any idea what I am doing wrong? I've read through quite a few pages, but still can't find Agnes, John or alice...............
thanks again
Tilly

Many thanks - I've got it!!
One more question - the name of the district "Reigate Foreign" - does it have any particular significance ?

Hello Liz
Thank you for all the links - I shall read them later tonight! As you say, it is strange that Reigate is listed as "Foreign" if it's in the centre.......... I thought the "Bell" was a pub and that they lived in the courtyard behind it.................
thank you again for your help

The family were in Reigate foreign not Reigate on both the 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses. Therefore Redhill not Reigate.
'Bell North Street Redhill Stood opposite the old Test Centre. Demolished 1958/59. May have had an ale house associated with it, perhaps located as a separate building at the rear. Situated in North Street, Redhill (street address approx no 39). A beer retailer and later a public house circa 1900 when George Charman was landlord. Later demolished. The Reigate petty-sessional report 1892 described the property as a beerhouse, licensed prior to 1869; owned by Charles Dagnall of Horley, brewer, and tied by trade to the Hornchurch Brewery Co. The tavern was run by C Aldridge who resided on the premises. The Inn was frequented by Cottagers and gardeners. (Charles Dagnall was plying his trade from the Five Bells, Horley, where there was a brewhouse attached.)'

The address of the family in 1891 is Linkfield Street, Reigate Eastern Ward, St Matthew's parish Redhill (a household away from the 'White Lion')
1891 census RG12 578 folio 122
The address on the 1881 census was Linkfield Street, Reigate Foreign, Eastern Ward, St Matthew's parish (several households away from the 'White Lion').
'White Lion 40 Linkfield Street A 16c building with first mention in the 17th century. Said to be the oldest building in continuous use as licensed premises in the Borough.'

Hello Valda and Liz
Thank you again for the information.
I am off on holiday tonight for two weeks, so I will not be able to reply if there are any other messages posted - so I "thank you" in advance, just in case.
