Garey, Gairy, Gayrey or Gayrie
« on: Thursday 10 April 08 16:42 BST (UK) »

Hello everybody,

This surname has been driving me nuts  Undecided I can't find any of the people I'm after in the Census, or Death certificates on Scotlands people I know should be there!
If anyone can help me out that would be marvelous.

Here's what I've got.

Ann Gayrie resident in Maybole parish aged 23 married Thomas McCrindle in 1874 in Dunure. From this her parents are given (still both living) as James Gayrie Ploughman and Mary Montgomery.
So far so good.

In the 1881 census Ann (Gayrie) McCrindle is in Dunure, Maybole aged 30, so born circa 1851, and her birthplace given as Kirkoswald, Ayrshire.

Annie McCrindle (nee Garey notice different spelling this time) died in 1933 aged 86 in Dunure, Maybole, Ayrshire. Her parents were listed as James Garey a Ploughman and Mary Montgomery.

So on this info of Annies life I have the names of her parents, I found her mother Mary Montgomery's death in Galston, Ayrshire in 1884. She was 66, so born about 1818, and her husband James Garey was still living and a General Labourer.
The informant of the death was a son though, his death cert in 1925 spells his name as Garey too but lists his fathers profession as Drainage Contractor (deceased).

So in essence I can't find anything of James Garey/Gayrie and family on the census or any death record for him. He was alive as 1884 and was born near to his wifes age (i suppose?) in 1818.

Can anyone help? Any other Gayrie/Garey researchers out there?

This looks like them in 1861 - as transcribed on the index:

James Garrey    40, agr. lab., b. Ireland
Mary Garrey    38, b. Ireland
James Garrg    14, b. Girvan
John Garrg    12, b. Kirkoswald
Ann Garrg    10, b. Kirkoswald
Mary Garrg    8, b. Girvan
Margaret Garrg    6, b. Girvan
William Garrg    2, b. Girvan

Address:  Dykeneuk, Girvan Ayrshire

Some children showing on IGI (using the batch code for Girvan)

ROBERT GARREY   Birth: 11 JUL 1863 Girvan, Ayr, Scotland
WILLIAM GARREY Birth: 06 MAR 1859 Girvan, Ayr, Scotland

With some luck, you might find daughter Margaret was born in 1855 in order to get a clue as to where in Ireland John and Mary came from. Can't see anything for her on IGI for Girvan (may have been born in 1854). Worthwhile checking on SP with a liberal use of wildcards!

Regards.
