Need help to find a death (Mary Jane Whiteway, née Farmery)
« on: Thursday 10 April 08 11:18 BST (UK) »

Hello everyone

There's a HUGE brick wall in front of me (and it's not even in my family, can you believe!), that I'm hoping you can help me tear down.  First, an explanation is needed:

A friend of my father has a bank book in the name of Mary Jane Whiteway.  I've discovered that this lady is his grandmother, born in 1865, maiden name Farmery.  She was the second wife of John Ridgeway Whiteway, a mariner, who died in October 1896 in Boston.  She had 2 children with him, Elizabeth Ellen (the mother of my father's friend) and Francis Robert (who died in WW1).

I have Mary Jane on the 1901 census (RG13/3044, Folio 19, Page 29) living with her 2 children and 2 of her step children at 5 Spain Lane, Boston, Lincs, but the trail runs cold after that.  I can't find evidence of a remarriage, death or emigration of Mary Jane Whiteway (other versions I've seen are Whiteaway or Whitesway) in the period 1908-1910.  The last entrance in the bank book is in June 1909.

Thanks to the help of the people on the BBC message board, I've got this far, but this particular lady now seems to have fallen off the face of the earth!  I ordered the death certificate for Mary Whiteway, registered in Market Harborough, but it's not the right one.

Any input would be gratefully received!

Thanks

Have you just looked on the free partial database, or have you been through the Full death indexes quarter by quarter?

I would look for a good few more years.
Bank books can lie around unused for years - she may have lived many years after the last entry.
After all she was only 45 then.

So she could have remarried or died within the next 50 yrs or so!

Hi there

I've looked through the free bmd as well as Ancestry up until the 1950s, although only for deaths I must admit.

It's all a bit of a puzzle because the gentleman in question doesn't seem to know anything about his family history.  I asked him whether he had ever met his grandmother and his reply was "of course, well, I must have" but he can't remember for sure.

Have you seen the son on CWG site?
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=465155

No indication as to whether mother is alive or dead though.
I wonder if any records survive about him at Kew, as to whether next of kin was his mother (in which case she was still alive in 1914) or someone else (in which case she probably wasnt)

Also - has your friend got the marriage cert of Eliz'th Ellen, his mother? just on the offchance that her mum was a witness.

And - do yuo know anythnig about her own parents. the Farmery's. They could still be alive when Mary Jane was last heard of, so finidng a will for them might mention their daughter and indicate if she was alive or dead when the will was made.

Just a few thoughts

Elizabeth was unmarried when she had her son, at the age of 39.  She married . . . . . aged 73, so I'm not sure the marriage certificate will be of much use!

I've got to say I wondered about the entry on the CGWC website as well, because it doesn't list either of the parents as "the late", and his father had been dead for the best part of 20 years.  Not an indication of course that they were both dead by this time, I know.

I've got to say I haven't really looked deeply into the Farmery family.  It would appear that Mary Jane had a daughter before she married, although she's not with her mother in 1901, so unless she was working already (which I admit I haven't checked), we have to assume the worst happened.

I know that she can't have just disappeared - she has to be somewhere, either a marriage or a death - but I just can't find her.
