BURN(S) marriage 1844
« on: Thursday 10 April 08 12:11 BST (UK) »

Hello, can anyone help? I have searched all the usual online places but cannot uncover John Burn's marriage circa 1844. His wife's first name was Emma and they lived in Plymouth. He was a tailor, as was his father Daniel. The couple had two daughters born in Jersey in the 1840s but by the 1851 Census were back in Plymouth. Emma was my gt gt grandmother and I would love to know more about her.
Any ideas??

Where does Emma give her p - o -b on the 1851? I she from the CI?

I am wondering if they could have married in Jersey.

But there are pages on John Burns marriages on FreeBMD within 2 yrs either way of 1844. I havent looked at every one to see how many have an Emma on the same page - but I would guess there are some.
They could have married anywhere. If his job (what was he in 1851?) meant they were in Jersey during their early married life, then the same reason could have taken him anywhere before that.
It might be an idea to get a birth cert of one of the children to find Emma's maiden name before anything else. One of them must be your gt grandparent, so that one would be the obvious to choose!

modified - just saw - you said he was a tailor.

Hi Liz,
thanks for replying. Emma was born in Plymstock, Devon, in 1824. Got that from the 1851 Census where she and John are living with theire two daughters and John's parents/ siblings. My last resort is to send for certificates as I've often got the wrong one!
Onward and upward...

but a birth cert of your gr grandparent wouldnt be wrong?

More risky to try looking for a John Burn/Emma marriage without knowing her maiden name, I would have thought.

Hi

I have no idea how to find CI births ...but the girls names in 1851 seem to be their nicknames ...Emma and Kitty/Kitley

in 1861 they are called Catherine J Burn , b 1849 St Helliers Jersey CI and Sarah E Burn b 1847 , St Helliers, Jersey, CI

sorry can't be of more help.

there is a marriage of John Burns to either Emma Nankevell or Emma Stabb mar q 1845 East Stonehouse , Undecided

Might be worth investigating the CI board, and enquiring there how to get a birth cert fro either Catherine or Emma, whichever is your gr gran, Empty

DebUSA you are a star!
It's Emma Stabb. On the 1881 Census there is a cousin called Elizabeth Ann Stabb living with John and Emma's daughter and her family. I couldn't make a connection wth the Burns family before.
I can close the subject now.
Thanks again,
