There is another John William born virtually the same time, who is quite easily traceable through the censuses, but I've had difficulty finding yours in later censuses. I wonder if this is him in 1871 -
John Wm Johnson 11 Adopted son Scholar Stokesley in house of - Ann Johnson unmar 56 No occupation Stokesley Mary Johnson mother widow 79 Retired Farmer Stokesely + lodger Thomas Bulmer 58 unmar Grocer Ravensworth + visitors Mary Caden 16 Dressmaker Durham Preston and Elizabeth Caden 15 Dressmaker Sunderland
High Green, Stokesley, Yorkshire RG10/4859 Folio 75 Page 20
In 1851 and 1861, this Ann Johnson seems to be the matron of the Stokesley workhouse....
(I can't find a John William Johnson b. Stokesley in 1861 census)

I have "blonde moments" myself
Yes, I meant that as John William Johnson couldn't be found in 1861, maybe he was your John William Hoggart in 1861, and just took his adoptive mum's name in 1871. However, I cant find him 1881 onwards! I wonder if anyone else will have any better luck....
Regards Catherine

Hello Catherine,
I'm sure you've got that right for me! Where he disappeared to before 1881 is a mystery but I'll keep plugging away at it. It's quite a sad story, a generation later saw another family member, Dinah 'Hoggett', in the same workhouse but she later married and got out. I often tend to forget to look at 'soundalike' spellings so miss lots of things.
I know there's a lot of them around but my wife's late mother was nee Fox from Shelfield or Rushall in Staffs.
Thanks again, a great help.
