Hi RAA  Smiley

A George HAWKINS arrived in Tas in 1846 from Devon, as a convict.  I'll see what details are available and post them here.

Hi raa  Smiley

Sorry, I had to get off to work before I could reply!

George has a record in the Tasmanian Archives, you could contact them and find out what info they have and whether it's worth getting a hold of.  The index entry states:

HAWKINS, George.  Departed Woolwich on the "China", arrived Van Diemen's Land 16 May 1846.  There's also an extra note:  "Off Norfolk Island per Pestongee Bomangee May 1847".

The following info is from Ancestry - it's from a UK National Archives record, HO 11/15 "Australian Convict Transportation Registers – 1846":

HAWKINS, George.  Convicted at Devon Special Assizes, 19 July 1845.  Sentence:  10 years, to be computed from 19 September 1845.

Another National Archives UK record - HO 10/40 "Tasmania, Ledger Returns -1849"

HAWKINS, George.  "China" to Norfolk Island, 1846 - convicted Devon - sentence 10 yrs - hired by J. Evans, Huon.

What all this means, I'm not sure - the fact that in that last Ledger Return he is employed by J. Evans at Huon implies that he was still in Tasmania at that date, so I have no idea what the Norfolk Island references are related to.  This is where the record at the Tas Archives might be able to help.

As far as ascertaining whether he is "yours" or not, that's something that the Assizes records might be able to tell you - I would think the county record office would know where they are and how to either view them or get copies.

Hope that helps  Smiley

ADDED - I've just realised that the Norfolk Island stuff seems to relate to the fact that he WENT to Norfolk Island in 1846, and came OFF Norfolk Island in 1847...not a very long stay (lucky fellow, it would have been pretty terrible out there...)

Doesn't look like it raa - he was counted in a muster in 1849  Undecided

If by 'questions' you mean his wife remarrying as a widow - she might have just been convinced (or was hoping  Shocked  ) that he was never coming back, and it was easier to say she was a widow and remarry, than to say her husband was a transported convict and not be able to marry again  Undecided

Just my thoughts...

Hi Dave,
There are links to Devon record office on the "Devon Resources" board - for the Assizes records  Smiley

Here's the name indexes page from the Tassie Archives:  http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/nameindexes
Each index will have a link to order a copy or contact the archives for more info.

Cheers
