My OH's 2nd ggrandfather drowned at the mouth of the River Tyne on the 25th of October 1884 by the swamping of a joy(?) boat during a gale of wind.
I have his death certificate and it states that he was a waterman on the River Tyne and that an inquest was held on the 28th of October 1884.
Would this incident or the inquest have been reported on in the local papers by any chance? What resources are available for this type of information?
Any help appreciated. Moira

There is a full account of the accident in the Newcastle Courant of 31st October 1884. You can view this online by registering for a free trial of Newspapers Online at this link http://access.gale.com/gdctrial/login.html
By the way, according to the article, it was a 'foy' boat.
This is so brilliant to have and I feel really bad for grinning like I am considering the content.
