Peter - hello
With respect, I think there maybe two people here - one who joined the army and one who married Sarah Land and had Richard and Margaret.
If James retired from the army at the earlier of the dates you gave, and was born in 1806 - then he would have been only 14 when Richard was born If the later date, then no chance of him being Richard's father.
Do you have the date of the marriage to Sarah ?

Hi Mum44, thankyou for your reply, unfortunately I have very little information on James Takle other than he married Sarah Land, their son Richard was my GGGrandfather who settled here in Australia in 1854, on his death certificate it shows Devon as being his place of birth in (approx ) 1821. All attempts to locate his parents have been fruitless, he had a sister Mary christened in Essex in 1829, and marrying a Robert Butson in 1849 prior to there arrival here in Australia, both brother and sister settled in Yackandandah, Colony of Victoria , and both are buried in Yackandandah Cemetery. I can find neither arriving in Australia, allthough there is a Richard Takle on a shipslist arriving here in 1853 via either Hamburg or Dresden and Mary & Robert Butson on another list later on, but this is yet to be proven. I agree that the mathematics challenge the birth date of James but I am clutching at straws trying to turn up a lead, again let me thank you for your reply Kind Regards Peter
