Cemetary/Burial locations - Hinckley
« on: Wednesday 11 June 08 12:13 BST (UK) »

I am sorry if this is an obvious question although how do i go about trying to establish where the actual plots were where people are buried.

I note that the deaths of several of my ancestors are recorded in the St Mary's parish records although i wondered how i could go about locating their burial plots - particularly in respect of 19th century burials.

Any help, advice or assistance would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

How unusual to see this today as I've literally just been a walk round St Mary's churchyard in the centre of Hinckley (Half an hour ago). I found my man relatively easily (Thomas Sperry d. 1838) as its quite a small churchyard.

But I didn't go armed with much more than his name, date of death and the knowledge his inscription had been transcribed.

Anyone in particular you were looking for as some of the names I have seen are still fresh in my mind... (Shame I didnt see this thread yesterday...)

Hello Tracey

The family name is Burton.

I did visit Hinckley and have a wander around that cemetary earlier in the year although the only gravestone i found was obviously a relocated one - the first or second one lining the path slope adjacent to the entrance gates.  From memory that was a William Burton, which could be Greatx4 Grandfather although i couldn't really read the date clearly or the description to verify the details.

Perhaps it would be more visible in different weather conditions?

Anyway - any help would be appeciated in the event that you find yourself in that cemetary again.

Thanks for the reply.

I will be back at some point (to show grandpa his g.g. grandpa if nothing else) and I will definitely look out for Burtons.

The bottom of Thos Sperry's stone was illegible. But fortunately I had a handbag full of crayons (thanks to my toddler son) so I managed to do a very quick impression and get the inscription. But it did look like there were lots of very green covered and difficult to read stones.

I found my info on familyhistoryonline in the leicester & rutland burials database. I had a quick look for you and theres a lot of William Burtons  Undecided

Thanks Tracey

I am not familiar with that website but here are the main details of the principal family members i am trying to locate burial plots or more details of:

William Burton - 1787(circa)-1877 (Hinckley)
Mary Burton (William's Wife) - 1795(circa) - 1875 (Hinckley)

Joseph Burton - 1819-1899 (Hinckley)
Hannah Burton (Joseph's Wife) - 1825 (circa) - 1904 (Hinckley)

If you are able to help me with information in respect of these that would be great and might help me to verify details i have already.

Thanks in advance.

TB

p.s - I must take a crayon next time i go!

sorry pressed that too soon - little detail about the graves:

GRAVESTONES IN CHURCHYARD
The burial ground around the church was closed in 1858, when the cemetery in Ashby Road was commenced. Until that date for almost eight centuries the
churchyard was the burial place for the people of Hinckley. It was only in the eighteenth century that grave stones began to be a common feature in churchyards.
Before then graves were unmarked and whenever a new grave was dug, the bones of previous burials were dug up and reburied with the corpse. This
was obviously a sensible way of conserving land, but old grave stones have become a valuable part of our heritage. The churchyard possesses many fine examples of Swithland slate grave stones

also some other details about church exterior. - they may be able to help you if you contact them.

Diddy

Thank-you very much for that info - it looks as if my search may have to move to Ashby Road.  Again, i had a brief look round there, noting the earlier graves to the front, although i shall have to try and find out if there is a burial plot plan!

As for St Mary's i still need to go back with my crayon because i can't help but feel that the worn William Burton gravestone is that of the person above - but sometimes eyes see what isn't there!

Well i've had a good nosy around St Mary's as well as a quick look round Ashby Road cemetary although no such luck with those graves.  Although that's not to say that i've missed them as there are many graves to check!

If anyone is able to help me with this one i'd be most appreciative!!!

Tracey - i tried a crayon and paper on that possible gravestone on the embankment just inside St Mary's gate although sadly i think its too worn to reveal its secrets.   Embarrassed

Thanks in advance

I happened to stumble upon Joseph and Hannah Burton's grave in Ashby Road cemetary, Hinckley although have still not found William  (1786-1877) and Mary (1790-1875) Burton's grave.  If anyone can help me with this one i would be most grateful!

Hi TB,

Its great that you have found Joseph & Hannah Burton's graves. Smiley

I had another look for William Burton as I had a few spare credits. The closest I have found is a William who died 2.1.1876 aged 81 at Enderby. No Williams in Hinckley for that period, but that doesn't mean he isn't there as Joseph and Hannah weren't listed.
Hope this helps.

Let me know if you wont get a chance to get to Enderby to look as I work a few mins away and can do a check over lunchtime for you to see if this is your William/ or eliminate him. (Wish my relatives were so close Wink )

Thanks Tracey.  I am sure that William died in Hinckley and have a death reference from JunQ 1877 of Hinckley 7a 39 with a death refrence for Mary of MarQ 1875 of Hinckley 7a 48.  I will look towards getting his death certificate in due course although i just wondered where he was buried as gravestones can reveal so much infomation.

In the meantime, it looks as if i will sadly have to keep looking although if you happen upon any further info please let me know.

All the best.
