Census information Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi
I am trying to find the birth/death of Charlotte Briggs (Hill), she appears on the 1881 Census as Charlotte Hill, she married George Hill in 1877. The Census shows her as being born in Dullingham, Cambridgeshire abt 1856. I am able to find her on all Census under her married name but trying to find her birth is definitely like looking for a needle in a haystack...unless I'm just missing it somehow.
I have a copy of my grandfathers birth certificate (Edward Hill) and she is listed as his mother so I am sure I have the name correct.
Any help greatly appreciated
Many thanks Kaz

Check the IGI on www.familysearch.org.
There's an extracted baptism of a Charlotte Briggs in Dullingham in Feb 1857

1861 census
Newmarket Lane Dullingham Cambs
Leial Briggs Head 51 Agric Lab born Dullingham Susan wife 50 born Borogreen Cambridge James son 15 Agric Lab born Dullingham Robert son 13 born Dullingham Maryann dau 11 born Dullingham Charlotte Granddaughter 4 born Dullingham

Elial Briggs Head 41 Agric Lab born Dullingham Sarah wife 40 born Borogreen Cambs Sophia dau 17 born Dullingham William son 15 born Dullingham Esther dau 13 born Dullingham James son 6 born Dullingham Robert son 3 born Dullingham Maryann dau 6 months born Dullingham
HO107/1762 Folio 65 Page 33
The wife's name in 1871 is recorded as Susannah - perhaps 'Sarah' was a mistake.
Charlotte could well be the illegitimate dau of one of the elder girls from 1851 or the daughter of William(age 15 in 1851)
You may have to send for the birth cert to determine parents

That makes it almost certain that she was illegitimate.
I can't find an official birth registration for Charlotte in the Newmarket area in either 1856 or 1857 - sometimes they were registered out of the area and sometimes not at all.
The entry on FamilySearch doesn't give parents.

That's solved that, then
I've just found Ester marrying Thomas Watts in 1858 and appearing on the 1861 census with him and no- one else so had just decided it wasn't her. Only leaves Sophia
Charlotte is hiding on the 1871

I think Sophia married William Allan in 1866 living Boro Green in 1871 with two children but no Charlotte. RG10 1594 folio 12 page 16

Oh my goodness
David, Tricia & Rosie....thank you all so so much, I am just so amazed at what you have found for me..........and the mystery unfolds eh!
Rosie....i actually received a copy of her marriage certificate today! William Briggs and Ann Cater (their spelling not mine!) and Ann Hill were the witnesses to the marriage.
...and you have the baptism too, thank you all so much, I wouldn't have known where to find this one.
Mmm, all i need to do now is tie George and Charlotte (100%) up to my grandfather!!! Whom, unfortunately is a little more difficult. I have his death certificate and his marriage certificate to my grandmother, but unfortunately only approx age give or take a year. Birth Certificate I have also, which I am hopeful is the correct one and that is what has lead me to this line of Hills/Briggs. So still have lots of needles and lots of haystacks to go through!
Thank you all so so much, greatly appreciated
Karen

You are right Tricia,
Charlotte is certainly hiding in 1871.
Karen, don't know if you are aware but there is quite a lot of Cambridgeshire bmd on familyhistoryonline if you have further research in the county, it's pay per view (free to search) but worth it as you can look at marriages/baptisms/burials for 10p or less. It has been well worthwhile for my Cambridgeshire research and of course CFHS pages and CAMDEX.

There is one lady who is a likely candidate on the 1871 but can't really prove it one way or the other - perhaps Rosie can with the baptisms
This is Caroline Briggs born 1857 Dulingham Cambridgeshire
She is a servant to a grocer Thomas Jackson in St Andrew the Great Cambridge
If there isn't a Caroline Briggs born 1857 Dulingham this may be her with incorrect name

Catherine Sandys, I will find out where you went.

This looks like the marriage of Charlottes grandparents, from Boyds marriage index.

Hi
Can't see a baptism for a Caroline Briggs around that time that could be Dullingham. There are a couple one c1857 Thorney but she is still single in 1901 and is in Thorney 1871 - the other c1860 bn St Andrew the Less found on census 1861/71/81.
I cannot find any other suitable candidate in 1871 and the Caroline that 'Tricia has found I can't see on earlier or later census
