Brummie handwriting expert needed
« on: Monday 25 September 06 22:30 BST (UK) »

Hi,

The attached shows extracts from the 1871 census for Langdale Street in the St Geo East area of East London. Eliz Morecock (66, Charwoman) is my Gr Gr Gr Grandmother.

Can anyone more familiar with the area attempt to clarify what the word/placename after 'Birmingham' might be?? The word 'Warwick' has been added - but is this a correction to the original?

Many Thanks,
Dave

After 20 reads, no-one has offered a suggestion, so here's mine -

it looks like Frode to me, but haven't the faintest idea what that would refer to!

Let's hope that gets the ball rolling.

Dave,
Being a 'Brummie' I thought I might be able to help!
It certainly looks like 'Frode' to me, but I have never heard it mentioned. The 'Warwick' part looks like a correction. Birmingham was a part of Warwickshire before all the changes in the 70s

Hi Dave  Smiley

Looks to  me like it starts with a "T" rather than an "F" - "Trode"?  Still doesn't sound right (not that I know anything about Brum!)

Best I can do is 'Trust' - not sure that helps much, though.

Tredi = Tredington??

This has been suggested, and it seems Tredington has been regarded as part of Warwickshire when not part of Worcestershire.

Any informed - or uninformed  Cheesy - comment?

Thanks for all the other responses so far BTW. They confirmed my previous mad guesses were not so mad.

On the other entries the county is put before the place except the ones for Birmingham .......? and Hanover Germany, could this be significant?  Perhaps the enumerator thought Birmingham was in foreign parts  Roll Eyes
