South Manchester Hospitals 1930's
« on: Friday 11 April 08 10:59 BST (UK) »

Hi all,

Some of my Cheshire ancestors (Sale area) deaths from the 1930's are listed as South Manchester in the bmd. I'm assuming they may have died in hospital outside of the Bucklow area.  Does anybody know what hospitals there were in the 1930's which would have been in the south manchester area?

Many thanks

Hi Jo -
According to GENUKI, Manchester South was "the wards of  All Saints; Ardwick; Chorlton cum Hardy; Didsbury; Gorton North; Gorton South; Levenshulme; Longsight; Medlock Street; Moss Side East; Moss Side West; Openshaw; Rusholme; St. George's; St. Luke's; St. Mark's; Withington; Wythenshawe (the latter transferred from Bucklow district in 1936) / the remainder of Manchester was in Manchester North district"

On that basis there was Withington Hospital (previously Chorlton Workhouse) and the Baguley Sanitorium - I do know of Sale people that were patients in the latter. Wythenshawe Hospital was the successor to Baguley but later in date - there's a bit on the history at

I think Manchester Royal Infirmirary, being south of All Saints Church was probably in that ward & registration district too. I'm not sure about Christie's - I think its Didsbury, so is another candidate - plenty of choice!

Further thoughts - this was the era of "Cottage Hospitals" - there was one at Sale and/or Ashton on Mersey I think in the 30s - I expect there'd be others that could have taken patients from Sale.

There was also Altrincham General Hospital, which is only a few miles from Sale and definitely south of Manchester.  The only way to find out would be to buy one or more death certificates.

Hi,

Many thanks for your replies.  An ancestor died in 1935 in Ashton Upon Mersey Hopsital which was a nursing home at the time, the district for that was Bucklow.  I'm inclined to think Altrincham was Bucklow area as well.  Withington sounds a possibility, Ill check it out.  Thanks for the link

Checked GENUKI - Jo is correct, Bucklow covered Altrincham 1898 to 1974, so that would exclude Altrincham General.
